I have seen free shipping offers on UPS's, surprisingly enough, but don't have anything else to say about it, other than a vote to use (or stick with) APC. APC themselves sometimes have deals where you send in an old UPS, sometimes even a competitors, to get a good deal...

I don't *want* to buy it in town; I just assumed that the cost of
shipping a heavy object would more than make up for any difference in
