I am trying to nail down what is happening on a server and hopefully a solution.

What services are supposed to be on it? (externally visible
services -- the reasons the machine exists)

Machine has many purposes... runs apache for our intranet, has a mail server for doing our newsletters, is the LTSP server for the production line, Samba share... I'd have to dig up the docs (thanks Intechgra!) to list everything.... it's a beast of a box though - don't have those specs handy though...

The only plan I have at the moment is to wait for a reboot (anticipate one tonight if allowed), output ps to a file, then wait for the next time and ps again to see a comparison.

Also take a "ps" snapshot before reboot to compare against. Even if
the load isn't particularly high, that'll show you what the steady
state should look like better than a snapshot immediately after
startup.

Good plan....
