I dont KnowForSure, but I've heard that some of these new devices have an override or "manual mode" which will play the normal, old-skool MP3's and such... this would shoot PFS in the foot but surely save the mfg a lot of support call time!!

You could always take a linux laptop to the store, and TryForSure to mount it USB and play a file you chucked onto its filesystem ;)
Good benefit of the brick-and-mortars... or, you could find a nice pre-PFS player used or on a discount site.

"PlayForSure" is the Microsoft branded DRM.  "PlaysForS%$%^" is more like
it. (It is a very troublesome bit of code to keep working, even if you do
use Microsoft products.)  It also drains battery life on the device
because of the extra cpu load.

I have been looking at either the SanDisk or iRiver.  (iRiver will play
ogg files!)
