Oh, they'd also like feedback on their beta LMLCD, which is online -- I'll post the URL, but I suspect it has the latest versions of "motion" and supporting drivers, etc.  I'm not sure if it is a bootable yet, I've DL'ed the ISO but have not checked it out yet.  Still setting up in my new residence and not yet online there (did I mention comcast's scheduling can be painful?  I kinda wish I had switched to clearwire now, as the setup appears to be instantaneous).  I hope we can get at least 2 others to check out this board's capabilities, I think it is a nice piece of hardware.  Combined with the home automation suite Mr. O wrote about (IIRC), the triggers provided by "motion" and the board's other sensors could be cleverly combined.

I am also thinking of splitting one or more cameras' views with simple mirrors -- does anyone have any feedback on this?  I think a jitter-free mounting would be crucial, so that the zones of video setup in motion would not interfere with each other... or maybe even a dome mirror for broader coverage (I'm not ready to buy nicer cameras and fish-eye lenses.  FWIW, harborfreight has occasional sales on their cameras, which they don't always have in-stock at the local store (but I've also ordered from them online without any unusual rigamarole).

On an unrelated note, which may be covered in list archives (sorry if so)... is any of our readership using a cuecat scanner to inventory thir media, and/or scan UPC codes of other products they bring home?  Some years ago, I read a fellow's site who was tracking his consumption by placing a scanner at his kitchen trash, and scanning everything that had a code :)  I'd also like to use it to manage my personal lending library (mostly books) when friends with hungry brains drop by ;)

thanks y'all,

    Ben

PS - LML's beta CD image should still be at:  http://linuxmedialabs.com/ISO/livelmlR01.iso
(name suggests it is a bootable/live-cd)

No, unfortunately, I don't have any extra cameras to offer -- except one odd-ball I *could* lend out on special request -- it is a "beauty cam", a "digital" microscope with composite-out :)  It is a small fat wand with ~5 LED's around the CCD, and is only in focus very close to (read: on surface of) a subject.  Very interesting for:  seeing dirt in yer nails, examining porous surfaces, examining fabrics' fibers (easy to see synthetics vs naturals), etc.  Otherwise, a cheap mostly-broken camcorder will often suffice (assuming only the tape mechanism is broken)... or a VCR :)

let me know,

Gee, you wouldn't happen to have a few extra cameras to go with
it would you? :-) I actually have an old little dome camera and
an even older B&W camera to hook to my capture card. That's on
the list of "stuck inside for the winter" things to do.

That be all,
Mr O.
