Printers not to buy for linux are Canon and Lexmark (Dell &
Compaq printers are typically Lexmark). 

If you want a printer to work under linux get an Epson or HP.
Most of them work without any nightmares. I can't tell you how
many times I've never gotten my Canon to work perfectly. My HP
PSC 1315 though, there's a winner. Haven't tried the scanner yet
though. Typically only use it for the occasional photocopy.
