Brian, you said this is your housemate's network?
Somebody has to point out the obvious: You could run a wire across the
house. A wire uses no power, has no moving parts, has no firmware
compatibility issues, doesn't go obsolete, and is immune to
interference.
Norvac sells premade cables up to 50 feet at reasonable prices. Home
Depot sells bare Cat-5e cable cheap (40 cents a foot?), and connectors
less cheap.
