As for why recommend Ubuntu... Because it is simple and the forums are very very very active so finding answers is typically quick and easy for new users. Gentoo forums are quite active as well but I wouldn't subject someone to learning how to compile a program unless they really wanted to learn something. Too many users are "point & click" so they need a starting point. Waiting to see how Fedora shapes up in the next couple years. Get their act together, improve package management, selection, and dependencies. Perhaps give Ubuntu a run for it's share of home users. Of course there is still Slackware to rule them all!
