Ubuntu has a couple of dozen full time developers working to improve
it.*  They put their releases through public betas where tens of
thousands of people try it out and report problems, and then they fix
(some of) the problems.  Ubuntu has a decent chance of working on
J. Random hardware configuration.

I don't know that Mint doesn't put similar effort into the Q/A of their
releases, but if nine out of ten EUGLUG members hadn't heard of it, I
doubt it.

Upgrading Ubuntu to use the non-free bits isn't hard, and it's a good
introduction to the subject of free vs proprietary software.
