Look at your /etc/X11/xorg.conf as well. What driver are you
using? Try changing it to something basic like 'vesa' for
troubleshooting. Is your internet connection up? Try getting the
ATI drivers (fglrx). "apt-get install lynx" for a web browser. 

If you're using an inexpensive LCD it may not sync right when
trying to startx. If you have a CRT to throw on there for
testing the do so. Also, find your monitor specs and keep them
written down somewhere. 

Here are the specs for my 17" Samsung LCD if it helps:

    HorizSync       30.0 - 81.0
    VertRefresh     56.0 - 75.0
    Option         "dpms"
