I would assume they use Linux to listen to the remote, drive the
on-screen menus, manage the video and audio processing hardware,
stuff like that.

that gets them to 2010, by which time desktop operating systems will
be either obsolete, or more like all-encompassing worldviews
intantiated in software (some would say they are well on the way
already) and beyond version names.
