You might want to check out the Plextor TV-402U,
http://www.plextor.com/ENGLISH/products/TV402U.htm

I know Plextor got slammed about GPL in the past, but I have
a similar device of theirs (no tuner) and it works great.
Can be controlled from linux pretty easily, mythtv, etc.
Still requires a "computer", but only one fast and smart enough
to store or otherwise handle the divx stream over USB,
so usb 1.1 can even be used... I'd like to see someone hack
up a microcontroller frontend to this, with a channel display on LCD,
IR remote, and USB mass storage support.

<rant> TV's should all be built with better equipment for watching the
watcher,
though -- when one falls into a low-breathing, slow-heart-rate stupor,
it can shut off or tell one to exit the building....
or it could be friendly and just shut off when one falls asleep :)
</rant>

Is that the TV, or the DVR? my DVR has USB (so does my DVD/Upsample box)
Its only a matter of time before TVs have USB with JPG/MP3/MPG support.
My DVD player reads USB sticks and my USB HDD, but only seems to play
JPG/MP3 from the HDD.
I havnt hooked up anything to the DVR's USB, but it sure would be nice
if you could backup your favorite shows over usb!
If your TV could record stuff, and compress it onto a USB drive, that
sure would be a useful feature too.
