I don't believe it's Microsoft's fault for not providing the update.
I do believe it's there business and priority to provide notification.
They did provide some notification thought there Security Blog and
off color press from CNet and other online news outlets.

I think some of the issues at hand are large enterprise organisations
have a 6 month to one year patch role out process or at least a 6
month patch cycle for testing all patches. Most major Telecoms (
QWest, Verizon and yes the old Death Star AT&T ) are 6 months behind
on current patches. Now HP, IBM and Sun may have a patch that has
been test for a year or more and meets most orientations gold patch
level standards. The problem is when you run a 24x7 shop you want
your five nines 99.999% up time. That means you can only have less
than 5 minutes 35 seconds of maximum downtime a year. Now I don't
know about you but if you have ever worked on a N Class rp7420 or any
of the older stuff. It can take a good 15 to 20 minutes for all the
memory and processor testing to happen. I remember it taking a full
30 minutes for a old V Class server to be rebooted. If I remember
correctly a Sun V770 or E4500 can be rebooted in about 15 to 25
minutes on Solaris 7 or 8. The downtime can be mitigated by using
high availability clusters. Even if you have HA Clusters Telecoms
don't like doing software changes due to the change factor. If
Telecommunications companies had it there way they would not have a 6
month upgrade cycle. Upgrading a 5ESS phone switch is a One year
planning cycle. I don't know what the patch cycle at the NYSE, NASDAQ
and SEC are like. I know they have backups and redundant systems for
take over so they should not be hit by this at all. On the corporate
site you should be fine. If you have a 6 month patch cycle and can
move your applications from one machine to another with out too much
pain being involved.

I have a question about this, since the discussion seems to skirt the issue:
Do you believe that Microsoft is liable for damages that might ensue for
not performing a [simple, logical] code update to their older products?

If I was a day-trader, I'd consider my workstation, its OS, the trading
software,
and my networrk uplink (and security of course) to be Critical
Infrastructures in
my little office. I would not think it wise to use known-to-be-outdated
machinery,
especially knowing the risks. Yes, it is YARU (yet another reason to
upgrade),
unfortunately, but I don't know that I could blame Microsoft if I had
delayed trades.
I think I would expect Microsoft to reach out and inform me, however, as a
customer,
and not just through their b'jillion ad campaigns and dream-injection
methods. :)

I'm sure we'll all gasp, and then eventually have a bit of a laugh over the
fallout
surrounding this event... it just reminds me about so many things that we as
consumers and citizens are responsible for. I'd rather see a corporate
charter
become revoked, however, than to see corporations become further
relied-upon,
I find it disgusting how sometimes consumers expect to be coddled by inc's.
