I've measured 75 Mbytes/second sustained sequential reads from the 750
GB SATA Seagates, best case. A box of 20 drives might be able to
saturate one 10 Gig ethernet port. Of course, constructing the system
that connects those 20 drives to one NIC cost-effectively will be a
challenge.
Here's another application that could use that network bandwidth without
needing a disk: a LocalDirector clone -- a box that fronts for a web
server farm and distributes incoming requests to all the cabbages.
All the traffic goes through the front end box w/ minimal processing,
and never touches a disk.
Of course, then all the cabbages would also need a 10Gig NIC, and
*they* wouldn't saturate it.
