Ya, the Wi-Fi is working great and I am just going to get a land line for around the computers. Getting the directional antenna allowed me to see what was really going on in my vicinity and finally understand wireless a little. The bummer is that I can't use the antenna in another location, say, on another computer to do experimentation, because I need the Internet to do research while I am experimenting.

I have another USB Wi-Fi adapter /w dongle that I can use directionally, but it gets 1 Mbps and poor signal strength...and when the wind blows the signal drops out. You get the idea. Nothing I would use to try to learn Linux wireless on. I do have ZOD on a dual boot with XP on that Wi-Fi box, but I think I am going to use a couple of spare computers to build a test Wi-Fi and try to learn more...something I can tinker on. Basically, Linux wireless Internet is gonna have to wait a while.

WARNING! EXPANDED RANT AHEAD!

I just got over the Goldilocks Syndrome: first I blew a lot of money on computers and ended up in debt; then, I cheap'd out and got a lot of headaches; now things are just right on hardware. Hey, I'm only four years behind now! To be fair to me I've been working six and seven days a week, in non-computer work, for the past five years, but fortunately my friend is almost finished with the remodel I've been helping him on. Of course, the crappy night job goes on, but this has let me dumpster dive for some interesting hardware. So my point here is that it looks like smooth sailing on hardware for a while, so take it slow and enjoy the ride.

I need to turn my direction to my main focuses: art related projects and getting a day job. I see some expanded possibilities for Tux on YouTube; so I am re-energized. I also solved an important design issue relating to the materials for the body of the costume. Now, I have to execute the design. I should have it done for the fair, but it all depends on how it turn out and there won't be a Tux 2.0 if it fails. Tux is just a goof. Just a little moral support. The comic is another issue. I'll be seriously engrossed after I get 1 GB of memory for my design box (I had to steal memory from that one to get ZOD running.) Yes, I work the memory margins.

The thing I was saying about the "Gift Economy" and open source is that the dynamic of presentation is changing rapidly. The [EMAIL PROTECTED] idea is outmoded and there are better forums for that.

Thanks for getting back to me. This is a long winded rant (and, I hope, a little humorous) on the state of this perennial n00b.

Hey, you asked "why!"

Wow. so, that was kinda long.

aparently i dont have the authorization to add/remove or anything like that (just approve/delete unsubbed postings.) If you can send email from those accounts, you can unsub yourself.

Ive been having trouble with wireless phones too... took me 3 months (and 3 phones...) but now I have a 5.8Ghz that will work the distance I need (It turns out that just because its 5.8Ghz, doesnt mean it will work better than 900mhz!) My five year old 900mhz phone works better than pretty much all the 5.8's under a hundred bucks (I got an open box phoe for $80.) I can find it right now, but i found some nice "rubber duck" antenna for under $20, (with magnetic base, and cable with either tnc or sma connectors.) They also had an amplifier for around $100 (onsale), that looked pretty apealing too.

Im unclear on if you got your wifi working right or not... is everything working right?
