Just a guess, it may not be a function of kde. Do you also use kdm the
kde display manager or gnome
display manager. Check for a file such as
$KDEDIR/share/config/kdm/.kdmrc. Also you might check the init scripts
to see what program actuall y configures the display for kde on your
system. If you are using kde and kdm try installing just gnome and see
if it works, if so then install kde , but don't change the display
manager.  These may not alter the characteristics of the display, so
this is just a guess.
