I assume the X server *is* getting it right. But KDE is overriding
that. In any case, I was able to fix this in KDE, but not in
xorg.conf.

If so, changing distributions won't help.
The X server is at a lower level than the desktop. Changing desktops
within a distribution shouldn't affect X's ability to get your screen
resolution right.
