I don't know if this message got through or not. It keeps telling me message
could not be delivered, so I'll just post it again.
I switched to a VGA cable and the blinking stops. Now the picture is just
crappy analog-ish.

The X server is at a lower level than the desktop. Changing desktops
within a distribution shouldn't affect X's ability to get your screen
resolution right.
