I don't have a recommendation for a good webcam, but before you write
off a camera as useless, have a look at http://mxhaard.free.fr/.  This
site has a Linux driver that supports over 200 "unsupported" webcams.  It
also has a few simple webcam applications.

A few months ago my boss let me take home an old Intel webcam from work
that nobody was using.  There's no official Linux support for it (and
there probably won't ever be...Intel no longer supports the product), 
and it's probably not the best webcam available, but the price was right
(free), and it works with the mxhaard.free.fr driver.
