I don't have a recommendation for a good webcam, but before you write off a camera as useless, have a look at http://mxhaard.free.fr/. This site has a Linux driver that supports over 200 "unsupported" webcams. It also has a few simple webcam applications. A few months ago my boss let me take home an old Intel webcam from work that nobody was using.
