I don't have a recommendation for a good webcam, but before you write off a webcam as useless, check out http://mxhaard.free.fr/. This site has a Linux driver that supports over 200 "unsupported" webcams. It also has a few simple webcam applications. I have an old Intel CS430 webcam, which my boss let me take home from work because nobody was using it.
