I agree about know where your data is, Mr. O, and I think that it is
not necessary to keep a 2nd system up & running to achieve the
redundancy of S3 -- only to have a spare drive around with the data on
it.  Seal it hermetically and bury it in the yard, or keep it in the
closet of family or friends ("off-site").

Why do you think a 2nd system should be running, John?  Unless you're
away from home all the time, and still relying on network to access
your own data (at a distance).  If that is the case then you prolly
want remote management tool so you can power cycle them.... and in
that case, leave the small embedded management thing running, and
power-UP your storage on-demand :)  The management hardware costs more
than the power bill though =/
