Yeah, the mediatemple stuff looks pretty need. I've been debating trying it out, to see if it's worth using it for a side project. Another interesting option is the Amazon EC2 cloud along with S3 for storage. There's plenty of debate out there as to whether this kind of setup is cost effective. These guys make a point of making it easier to get setup on EC2/S3 http://rightscale.com/ For VPS, I've used Rimuhosting and Slicehost. Rimu was great, good support, but Slicehost has a much nicer interface, and much better prices. The waiting list at Slicehost is a couple months out these days. It's hard for me to justify grid or VPS for web hosting however, when there are quite a few dirt cheap dedicated server outlets out there. I have a server at http://iweb8.com now, and their support is pretty minimal (altho to be honest, I haven't really needed support once the server was set up initially and turned over to me), but they are damn cheap (the close-out specials - link on the right of the dedicated servers page - are just silly). I've also been looking at http://serverpronto.com and http://layeredtech.com. I've heard of people supporting large sites with multiple VPSes - and I don't mean they installed Xen on their own servers, I mean they have multiple VPSes at Slicehost or something. I can see the value in being able to quickly bring up and tear down virtual servers, but it's just not priced right for me right now. Ok, back to the original idea - using a web service for storage. There are a number of really cheap LAMP hosting solutions out there. I recently grabbed a Dreamhost account for some extra off-site storage. Their current deal is 500 GB of storage and 5TB of bandwidth for like $11 a month (cheaper if you pay a year or more at a time, of course). I don't use any of the PHP or MySQL or other features they have - I use it strictly for cheap, off-site, FTP file backup. - Jason L.
