Thanks, all. It was definitely a corrupt keyboard software driver the first time around. But it seems it could have been the trackpad on the later instances, since they were not so severe. I've been unable to find any way to turn off the trackpad on this machine through a setting, so have been using a thick surgical bandage held down with duct tape and one end of the duct tape had worked itself loose. :-)
It's rather amazing just how abridged the HP manual for this machine is. You'd think the information on how to disable the trackpad would be front and center, but if it is I missed it. But in any event, I'm functional again, with a new, longer piece of duct tape. Best regards, Marbux
