I'd have to say the issue is more with unpowered hubs and
no-name hubs. I've had great success with Belkin hubs and Costco
hubs have crapped out. Unpowered is nothing more than an
extension with multiple outlets. That's just asking for trouble.
When are we going to get USB switches! Narf.

As for hard drives, BobC does have this goofy little micro-drive
doohickey that craps out when trying to use it with linux but it
works fine in that OS with the Start button.
