I don't load modules for the majority of my hardware. Generally build everything into the kernel. Plus that wouldn't necessarily turn off the device, it'd just make it 'disappear'.
As for "why not unplug it?" Have you seen my desk? I have a USB scanner, printer, joystick, keyboard, mouse, hub, thumb drives, camera cable, and card reader. It would be infinitely easier to create a button on GkrellLaunch to turn the port on and off if that is feasible. If I ever changed location of the device I could change the path easily enough.
