First do you have the Notification Area displayed in your panel? This is
where things like Pidgin, gnome DO, and Network manager live. If not, then
right click on the panel and click add to panel. Look for Notification Area
and drag it to the panel. You may need to logout and log back in to see
network manager reappear. If this is not it, let me know and we'll go from
there.
