Mark this issue solved, other than why neither Puppy nor Ubuntu auto-configured the connection.
After launching NetworkManager from a console and seeing no results, I decided to pack it in on the issue for tonight and began playing Mah-Jong on the new machine. Then I noticed a new icon on the task bar, right-clicked on it, and up pops a menu with one item an unchecked "Enable Networking" option. Checked the option and then loaded my first web page on the new machine, from which I am dispatching this email. Please let me know if you didn't receive it. :-) Thanks one and all, a lot, and especially Bob for coming up with the solution.
