And I suspect that you don't get any window-manager handle cues around the edge of that blank area, either? (and furthermore, that mouse-selecting/highlighting any text typed into the terminal does not make it visible?)
Compared to the variety of X oddness I've seen, I am surprised that the menu stays visible at the top of it... does that only come above the blank region when you activate the screenshot? Do you have any window-relocation hotkeys setup? (some WM configs allow a key combination with mouse drag to move a window instead of giving it input) Does that have any effect?
