For a test project I want to rent some space in the cloud (webserver and a small DB). Concerning the resources I need for testing, I could do it all on a laptop, but I like to get as close as possible to the real thing. So a place in the cloud is a given. Period.
For testing, a pay-per-hour seems to be the most economic solution. Amazon is probably the most mature system, but not the cheapest. However, telling from web discussions, like http://serverfault.com/questions/126354/amazon-cloud-vs-rackspace-cloud , it appears that EC2 is the only one that can *really* suspend a server. With that in mind, it could be actually the most cost effective since I can suspend it when not needed. With other providers, to take advantage of the pay-per-hour, you have to kill your server and set it up again when needed -- if I am not mistaken. It also seems like EC2 provides the best elasticity when needed later on. Q: == Does any of the above make sense? Any other suggestions, or potential pit-falls for the first-timer? -------------------------------------------- It also looks like EC2 has the rich bundle of pre-configured images: http://aws.amazon.com/amis Actually more than most people can handle. Q: == Any pro/con feedback on any of the images listed ? --Linux, of course :-) Thanks for reading it all :-) .................Horst _______________________________________________ EUGLUG mailing list [email protected] http://www.euglug.org/mailman/listinfo/euglug
