If the goal is an experiment, then what variables are you testing? The ec2 small server is a nice starting point. But is you are test clud configurations, why not google?
Given that twilio has a switch which flips them from amazon to rackspace and back, some of these are interchangable. So what variables are you trying to test? Which are you trying to hold constant? And which variables are you trying to optomize prematurely?
