Im also using 10.10. and I use gkrellm for a system monitor, its pretty easy to add to ubuntu. You can use synaptec, and the search feature to install it, and likely "apt-get gkrellm" will work. Its a graphical monitoring tool, and makes it easy to see problems and performance issues right away.
Im currently only running pidgen, and firefox and I have about 15 tabs open, and according to gkrellm, I havent used 500mb of ram. This computer has 2G of ram, and almost never uses swap. Websites with flash can really run my CPU load to 100%. I setup adblock in firefox, and now I can play scrabble w/out running the CPU at 100% (stupid flash based ads).
