Those Screenshots show a very high load average which does imply a
resource limit somewhere, but they do not tell us where that limit is.
 There are more diagnostics you could use if you still want to
diagnose it, such as iostat. There might also be clues in dmesg but, I
think your idea to upgrade the kernel is worth a try.  One thing you
should test first is to watch the load average and then stop each of
your user processes starting with Firefox, then Openoffice, then
Thunderbird, and see if stopping any of those reduces your load
average.
