That's a rare merc! Must be 1 of the sailboat
models which is very good. It should have a power prop
on it too. These are a lot more eff than 1/1 ratio
outboard gearing, the prop too which is usually bigger
dia and lower pitch in sailboat models.
Mine is a 7.5 hp evinrude sail model leg and a 50
hp evinrude foot with a homemade leg.

Or put epoxy in the freewheel or other way to
keep it from overrunning. Replace the propshaft seal
while your at it.
Will reverse hurt your controller? Give the
wrong voltage to the batts? Can the controller
reverse, if so that should do it if you switch both
the controller and the gear. Don't let the smoke out!!

The price is right! Keep it as light as possible.

Power required for a planning boat is weight/sqft
of planning area.
I have to decide on which type of boat to build
from scratch out of plywood in the next day or 2 to
test, demostrate my tidal generator.
Probably will be a 24" canoe with a glass bottom
viewing port. They are nice besides the low power
needed in that most states only charge a low tax on
any lenght canoe. In Fla it's about $12 vs $75 if it
was a regular boat.
The other choice is a cat or tri of 15'11", tax
lenght. It will go both faster and farther from lower
drag but carry less.
The canoe will carry 7 people.
    I have 2 E-outboards, 24vdc,60amp PM motors and
maybe my E-tec for it. It will be sail, 2 windsurfer
sails, and row powered too and recharged by tidal or
sailing. With T-US-125 type batts 2 or 4 hrs range, 1
hr per batt at 5.5 mph or twice that at 4 mph.
