A couple of possible interesting starting points:

http://www.rodster.com

http://www.factoryfive.com

The first is a kit that goes onto an S10 chassis -- uses the original
dash and controls and doors. Takes off about 500 lbs, and has a
strong truck chassis underneath.

Factory Five builds Cobra replicas using Mustang 5.0 donor parts. I
think the type 65 (Daytona Coupe) would be especially neat, as they
had about 40 more mph than the convertible Cobra, due to much better
aerodynamics! The Mustang donor is around 3300 lbs, but the finished
car (with a big V8) is just over 2000 lbs -- so there would be hope
for maybe a 1400 lbs glider, with brakes, wheels, tranny, real axle
designed for a 3300 lb car with 300 hp.
