Both of you have good points. The key point is that you design a product
to suit the number of units you intend to build.

A design changes drastically as you move from small quantities to large
quantities. An auto company will spend $100 million dollars on custom
molds to mass-produce parts, because it reduces the cost per piece by a
small amount. A small number multiplied by millions of cars pays for the
expensive tooling.

So, decide how many you intend to build -- then pick your construction
techniques to suit that quantity. 100 a year? -- Use fiberglass fenders.
100,000 a year? -- Use stamped steel fender. That sort of thing.
