Yes, the batteries most likely received a full charge. Sounds like they were in more of a thermal "walkaway" condition since the amps were still relatively low and the batteries could still be touched. I'm familiar with instances of boiled electrolyte and severely deformed monoblocs. What has been your normal end of charge amperage? I'm presuming about 1/2 through 1 amp.
You say this has happened a few times lately, so it may continue or even increase. Do you suspect it to be a malfunction of the charger? If the batteries are the source of the problem perhaps the list can learn from your experience. Would it be possible for you to install thermocouples on what appear to be the hottest batteries? At least one on a middle cell (meaning a 2 volt cell) and another on the outer cell next to it. Are you able to read voltage from each individual battery? If so, it would be interesting to see the voltage and temperatures together, and see which battery was experiencing the "runaway" condition first.
