County offered golf carts
SAN BERNARDINO: To meet state emission rules, GM offers a
loan of the electric vehicles.
10/01/2002 BY SHARON McNARY THE PRESS-ENTERPRISE

SAN BERNARDINO - San Bernardino County's newest vehicle
fleet may be a swarm of 84 electric golf carts on loan from
a General Motors subsidiary.

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors is set to
vote today whether to accept a one-year loan of the vehicles
from GM's Pathway Research.

At 3.2 horsepower, the vehicles max out at 25 miles per
hour. They will be restricted to hauling light cargo and
ferrying workers around county parks, parking lots and
office grounds, said Jim Morales, county fleet manager.

General Motors is distributing 5,000 of the vehicles in
California to meet a 2003 state requirement to make
zero-emission vehicles part of its product mix, news reports
say.

GM, which also owns the behemoth SUV Hummer brand, is
challenging the state mandate requiring zero-emission
vehicles.

Last month, low demand caused Ford to stop selling its
$6,495 Think electric car, which it was marketing as an
alternative to firing up the family car for short-range
trips.

Chrysler-Daimler also sells a small electric car for about
$7,000.

The 84 vehicles are made by Club Car, an Augusta, Ga., golf
cart manufacturer and distributed by Pathway Research, which
is underwritten by General Motors. A GM spokesperson was not
available to comment on the free loan program Monday.

After one year, the county is free to return the carts or
buy them at about $5,200 each. Maintenance will cost about
$75 per year per car to keep the batteries clean and the
parts lubricated, for a total county outlay of $6,300,
Morales said.

Thirty-six of the quiet-running two-seaters are destined for
use in county parks. The rest will go to fleet management,
sheriff, coroner, information services, public health,
airports, architecture and engineering and purchasing
departments.
