Students hit upon power-run motorbike Chennai, Sept 24
A motorbike run on electric energy? Yes, it's a reality, as
six innovative students of the National Institute of
Technology and Science have proved.
The students, studying mechanical engineering, have come up
with a prototype of such a bike, which is also free from
noise and pollution.
They have also registered for a patent and are looking for
support from the mobike industry to put it into mass
production after making necessary modifications to suit the
market.
Demonstrating their piece of pioneering work at the
institute campus and explaining the spark behind the idea, G
Vasanth, C Samuel Jayanth, R Lakshmi Narasimhan, V
Srinivasan, S Lokesh Kumar and T Rethas said it was after
seeing the electric car 'Rewa', now on the roads, that they
thought of a mobike running on electric energy.
"The bike will be a boon in the present scenario of rising
price of petrol," Vasanth said.
And for the mechanics of the bike: a rechargeable 24-volt
battery is the source of power. The direct-current voltage
of the battery is stepped up through an inverter and given
to a DC shunt motor. The power produced in the motor is then
transmitted to the rear wheel through the clutch and gears.
