Go for it.

That is the choice of the EAA for their AVCON adapter
(http://www.eaaev.org/avcon1450.html) and that is the choice of Manzanita
Micro for the PFC-50 (http://www.manzanitamicro.com/pfc50.htm).

The 10-50 and 10-30 (http://www.quail.com/locator/nema.htm) can be adapted
from the 14-50 but not the other way around because the 10-30 and 10-50 do
not have a neutral separate from the ground where the 14-50 has a separate
neutral from the ground.
