I use to own an 81 and 79, I had a golf 1.7 liter engine to replace teh 1.3 diesel one, but my condition deterioted before I swapped it over and lost my ability to drive.
If I remember correctly under the hood on the fire wall you should see 2 metal hoses and rubber hoses meeting near the center of the fire wall. Then inside, if the center council is removed, it should be visible, at lease the rear cap to it. I cant remember if its removed from under the hood or inside the car. A good manual for working on it was the idiots guide, I love the cartoons in it. Those electric heaters look nice, I may buy one for my wheelchair, if not wire up a heated seat.
