Electric cars battle it out Oct 8 2002
TWENTY five schools from across the Thames Valley took their
places on the grid for the Ford Greenpower Electric Car
Marathon Challenge, which took place on Sunday, September
29.
Each team had six hours to travel as far as possible around
the track at the Transport Research Laboratory in
Crowthorne.
Schools are given a free motor and batteries and must design
and build a vehicle within a strict set of specifications.
Lampton School from Hounslow in Middlesex led the field from
the start in Optima, until disaster struck and they dropped
down the field in the closing stages with technical
problems.
That left the race wide open and St Paul's Catholic College
from Haywards Heath motored through in The Silver Fox to
take the chequered flag.
Now they will go on to the national finals at Goodwood race
circuit on October 13.
The competition was open to teams of secondary school
students aged 12 to 16 and aims to encourage young people to
get involved in engineering and to promote environmentally
friendly forms of transport.
The country has a shortage of engineers and Ford hope their
competition will stimulate interest in technology and
promote engineering as a career.
