I agree, but it's much more than just that.  Think of the political
ramifications of backing a technology that eliminates multiple thousands
of jobs; the entire fuel distribution network would be eliminated - or
dramatically reduced - if battery technology was put into vehicles. With
fuel cells the distribution network is still needed, just changed to
hydrogen refineries, tankers and fueling stations.

That would be political death (and a big blow to parts of the economy),
even if the power plants used to provide the electricity to recharge
were still powered by petroleum based products.
