Pollution-free Electric Car Developed in Central China
A new pollution-free electric car developed by the Huazhong
(or Central China) University of Science and Technology
(HUST), in central Hubei Province, signals a brighter day
for China's energy and environmental problems.
The new electric car can save energy and realize low or even
"zero" exhaust discharge, a big step forward for the global
problem of over-consumption of petroleum by motor vehicles.
In China, 70 percent of energy consumed in transportation
industry is petroleum, 10 percent is various other
resources, leaving electric power accounting for only 20
percent.
If China's automobile industry continues to grow at its
current rate, the country's petroleum import volume will
exceed 100 million tons by the end of 2005, which will
intensify energy safe pressure as well as exhaust and noise
pollutions.
The driving system of the new car is composed of a switch
magnetic-reluct machine and its controller, which are
advanced global digital technologies.
The traditional clutch has been abandoned for a wheel box,
which makes the speed adjustment automatic. The car also
possesses energy recycling and mechanical braking systems,
which enable the car to run for a continuous 250
kilometers.
Since the early 1990s, HUST has developed a series of
electromotive automobiles, including motorcycles,
double-decker buses and street-cleaning vehicles.

ELECTRIC CARS TO TRANSPORT TOURISTS DURING 2008 BEIJING
OLYMPICS
Story Filed: Wednesday, October 09, 2002 5:30 AM EST
BEIJING, Oct 09, 2002 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Electric
cars will replace current motor vehicles during the 2008
Beijing Olympic Games in serving Olympic family members and
tourists, to fulfill Beijing's commitments that all vehicles
used during the event burn clean energy.
By the time the Olympics takes place, a motorcade consisting
of domestic electric vehicles will take shape, expected to
be the biggest fleet of its kinds in China, according to Fan
Boyuan, director of the Beijing Municipal Committee of
Science and Technology.
The city has also assured that all other buses and taxis
provided to the Games use clean energy such as natural gas
to guarantee a Green Olympics,
As part of the 863 National High-Tech Plan by the Ministry
of Science and Technology during the 10th Five-Year Plan
(2001-2005), a special research project on electric vehicles
began last year with an investment of 880 million yuan
(US$106 million).
The research resulted in the establishment of China's first
ever electric motorcar industrialized production base in
September this year in Wuhan, the capital city of central
China's Hubei Province.
With an investment of 200 million yuan, the base is expected
to achieve industrialization in the production of electric
cars in the coming three years, said Huang Zhaoqin, manager
of the Dongfeng Electrical Motorcar Company.
The waste gas released by this experimental car is 50 per
cent less than traditional cars.
Cars have become the choice means of transport for 20 per
cent of the people in the city compared to only 9 per cent
ten years ago, according to statistics released by the
Beijing Transport Development Research Center.
Beijing now has at least 2.5 million motor vehicles on its
roads, which has put pressure on the road network and the
environment of the capital.
This has led some experts to advise adopting restrictive
policies to bring this sharp increase in the number of cars
under control.
"Although there is no clear restriction upon privately owned
cars now, I advise the municipal government to adopt
measures in guiding the use of cars in a more reasonable
way," said Liu Xiaoming, vice-president of the Beijing
Politechnic University.
