Mexicans design their own electric car
TheNewsMexico.com - 10/7/2002

Worried about Mexico City's choking pollution levels,
engineers at the Ibero-American University (UIA)
have designed a fume-free car that runs on electricity.

The car, designed for travel within the city, can cover up
to 100 kilometers before requiring an eight hour recharge.

Designers used a conventional car for the project, replacing
the combustion motor with an electrical one plus a 120
voltage battery bank.

According to professor Cuitlhuac Osorio from the
university's engineering department, the idea for the
project came from UIA specialists concerned about
environmental pollution.

Inspired by foreign models and with the help of engineering
students, they developed the electric car using Mexican
technology.

The project is initially being aimed at UIA students and
professors who will be able to recharge their cars during
class hours at a special charging station built on campus.

"The objective is to begin with people at the university, so
they become conscious of caring for the environment and then
expand it outside (the university)," said Osorio. " We're
looking to promote the use of these vehicles not to
automobile companies but to...the Environment Secretariat
and academics."

Motor conversion costs stand at around 6,000 dollars,
although it is hoped the cost will decrease with demand.

As a next step, UIA engineers are designing a hybrid car
that would run on electrical energy and natural gas. This
would allow people to switch their motors to natural gas
when driving on the highway or when their batteries are
running out.

The university hopes people will consider the car a real
option in the future and that, as a national make, the price
will be within most people's means.

Predicted costs for the hybrid vehicle currently run at
around 20,000 dollars but would be reduced if the car sells
successfully.
