Thank you very much for your great email.
We all need to reflect on the "real meaning of the CHRISTmas season"
Merry Christmas to all and have a great time driving your EV'S :-)

Anybody know what this guy is talking about? Anybody got some messed up
batteries to test it on? Lawrence Rhodes......

electron path inside of the lead acid batteries, simple to use and works

I guess another thing that comes up here is why do we have an
electrical system that essentially makes it possible to
electrocute yourself by touching a hot item and any other item
out there that may be grounded, which a lot of stuff is. Humans
are frequently touching grounded objects, so that means that they
themselves are frequently a grounded object to some extent. And
we all know where that electricity in the hot line likes to go.
Keep one hand in your pocket and you'll never shock it. OLD ELECTRICTIONS

I also know someone who got skingrafts from shorting 28AWG across a 144V
pack unintentionally. He had copper plated on his hands.
I suspect the copper super heated and deposited hot plastic and copper which
fused to his hands. It is amazing what thin wire will take before
vaporizing. I once put a penny in the fuse box of my 67 Datsun Wagon. I
then put in a radio which required metal grinding. Below the radio in this
car is a switch. Its circuits being on the outside of the switch and facing
up. The tiny little flecks of metal fell on it and I didn't brush it them
off. The next time I turned on that switch it melted every inch of the
wire going to the fuse box. That was a long time ago. Will Rodgers said
something about gaining experience. I hope you will gain from mine.

Granted, this is the proper and scientific manner in which to examine the data, but
when asked why they're driving big SUVs, the first
words you hear out of every Soccer Mom's mouth is that it's safer for their children.

The thought has occured. The first try was for less than $1000 and for
about 1500 watts. We ran into limitations at about 1300watts with the
"Normal" TO-246/264 parts. So we got dragged updwards by market needs
and my enthusiasim.
A 1000 watt device could be fine tuned for many reasons.
Peak efficency, I try to keep the peaks as broad as possible. We have
not super tuned any of our gear for any particular data point. It just
happens that the PFC50s are more efficent the higher the output voltage
is. Or as Lee has put it, as high as I have gone with this setup.
The point you are missing or trying to get me to see, is that the
majority of the charge energy transfered is done in the bulk phase, and
this is where the efficentcy COUNTS the most. What it does for the hour
or so of the taper/equalize/float phase can be pretty bad because the
total power transfered is a fraction of what is transfered while in full
power bulk.
So...I could be at %20 and delivering 0.5 amps for hours, and not waste
a fraction of a Kwhr.
But with a main full power transfer of Say %60-70, at say 20 amps...
there is a noticable loss that shows up in the power bill. I will bank
my high 80 to low 90s for the majority of the charge against some poor
PF, low eff at really low currents.
Funny about my peak power losses. I can turn the chargers down....and
still do what ever test or comparison is wished. Yea it would be
educational for all of us since I know the PFC50 gets a little sloppy
under 10 amps.
I know that Switchers can be lossy at points. But I think My PFC
chargers and the simple time out functions save rather large amounts of
power compared to the Competition. The Brusa'a are in a rather higher
priced range, even for the smallest unit.
Doing a 12 volt pack from even 120 is not comparison that I would come
out well on. Even a simple transformer and rectifier charger at really
low voltages will have lower losses than our PFC stages. But our PFC
gear can do these large input to output ratios.... without jumpering
taps and shunts.

Hi: Has anyone every used a Solid State Relay to switch a Russco (or later,
now under construction, variac) 120v 20 amp Charger? I would like to
implement a timer control, and found a nice 25 amp 240 volt relay at all
electronics, new potter brumfield, that switches with 3-32 v. I have heard
that the SCRs can produce some hash- anybody every run into problems?
Thanks, and Happy Holidays!

How are others reading the archives these days?
Since I prefer to follow the list by reading the web-based archives rather
than receiving individual e-mails, I usually keep up by using the Yahoo
pages. Unfortunately, Yahoo sometimes doesn't post all of the messages. In
the past, I went to the Crest archives to fill in the blanks. For the last
few months, though, the Crest archive has been usless, with the "current"
directory being Jan 2001, and the Nov/Dec 2002 directories empty.
Am I missing something here? Is there a complete archive aside from Yahoo,
which is only adequate at best?
