Seth as you well know the stored energy is not all wasted, you get it
back when the transmission shifts. If you slow it down fast enough. We
did dyno plots on a rather healthy 460 Ford once that showed a 200 Hp
Bump When shifting from first gear to second with a C-6 Tranny. Yea the
460 has a LOT of rotational weight, lots of stuff WAY off the rotational
axis. So... if you DO shift you will get it back farther down the track.
Most likely where you can do something with it.
Since US DC boys have all the torque down low, and need more in the
higher RPMs. this could be a handy way to store some snort.
Now in a light chassis without a tranny, and now shifting.... It's kinda
not worth the effort to gain %1. All that can be made up with 5 Def F
more battery temp...
I rather have that wieght where it can do some good. Like a HUGE
commutator, that doesn't break a sweat at 2000 amps....I can add a lot
of wieght for that!!

Thanks Seth for the clarity of the concept. We all know there is more
rotational enertia in a larger motor, but it doesn't matter that much,
in a 2000 lbs EV.

Uh... yea My PFC chargers..
Sorry I am rather Biased about that....

Mine are fully adjustable for any voltage fron 12 to 450 volts DC, Can
use 120 to 240 VAC as a input and anything inbetween.
That just for starters... Check the Website out, there are LOTS of
folks on the list that can speak for these chargers.

The huge advantage is if you have a motor that can take 2000 amps and
do something usefull with it instead of Melt down, It will more than
make up for the added torque down low. Once the Series paralel switch
goes from series to paralel, you have the same power as if you had 1000
amp on each motor.
And NO you don't have 800 Ft.lbs of motor coming out of the hole, your
60 ft times say that.NOW gone postal with 8 incher DOES have the ability
to make 800, or 400 on each motor.
And a battery pack that can make 1850 amps, More than enough to saturate
the 2000 amp motor loop. Your SVRs don't. Even on a good day you would
need a 2:1 ratio.
Also the rotational enertia is NOT what we are talking about, Both Evs
Killa cycle and a single big motored Zombie don't have a transmission.
You have two motors and the attached Chain that has to be accelerated,
John will have a drive shaft.
Yes the Effect of the S/P will be like a Lenco, with any shifting, you
will have twice the torque on the drive shaft. But that's only there for
a short while. Otmar's Hair ball controlled S/P switch waits for the
amps to fall to 1/2 the programmed maximum, then hits both motors with
the full controller amps. John's set up will HOLD the motor amps steady,
until the controller runs out of volts and current. So... the S/p set up
will launch better, then you will have the same watts delivered to both
motors. Then the lack of brush timing will strangle the twin motors just
like it does a single one.
What S/P does is give you two electrical gears. and this is good if
your motors Eff falls dramaticly at over 1000 amps. But the far end of
the track is still governed by thge Back EFM of the motors, and how many
volts you have under load.
A perfect run is to draw max amps from one end of the track to the
other. S/P doesn't do this. It could. But if you switch early, then you
most likley won't have the volts or timing to keep pulling. Ot and I
have talked this over.... There might be a software feature that lets up
play with when the shift happens.

Only in a light bike that is at the traction limit. A Car will have two
tires. And better chassis weight transfer.
I am not talking about a tranny, ONE big motor VS two smaller motors
with Series paralel. John's concept.

Yea I agree. YOUR BIKE is NOT the White Zombie.

But your motors are 2, and you have a chain that connects the two, this
is a LOT of enertia to spin up.

One of the founding concepts for a single large motor is, that the
actual limits are the size of the commutator. A single large one can
take a LOT more amps than many small ones.
It scales better than 2:1. So the smaller motors have the losses of the
drive train, and all the extra brushes and bearings.
You can get more from a single one done right, than from 2 not tuned
up.
A very fast Ev in Arizona has cut his motor weight in 1/2 and doubled if
not trippled the output Hp. It's rather clear that 1/2 the weight and 3
times the power are the way to go.
Now two really tuned up and fed all the amps they can stand... that is a
place nobody's gone yet.
So far all we have done is break things with the twin 8s in GP.

Come on Bill don't toss hand granades at the next Big thing in Ev Drag
racing.... tuned and Dialed in single big motors.
Can you say all your brushes have %100 swept area???, What does the face
look like, Pitted??? chipped, The brush leads, Blue, and straw
colored???
Got plasma trains leading from the brush towers???? Unless you take it
apart and Look, you don't know what you have.
I have been saying for years a single larger, but not too large motor
would probably out pull your 2 motors. I have a bike doing 12s up here
with a single motor, and Hawkers, and a measly OLD Raptor at 156 volts.
I forget what your last run was but it's been quite a while ago.
Please get some fresh Hawkers and get Killa cycle back on the track.

Series paralel is a good tool, and takes stock motors to places they
could not get to, but it is not a Cure all. Good motor prep, well
thought out drive trains, and Dogged determination are the winners.
John, and all the Big Mod Motors efforts have a rather rough row to hoe,
and there is Gold at the end of the rainbow, but it's hard and
expensive.
That's why I have a Dyno.

 For your viewing pleasure:

This is a creative HONDA commercial for the UK market...

There are no computer graphics or digital tricks in the film.(link
below) Everything you see really happened in real time exactly as you
see
it. The film took 606 takes. On the first 605 takes, something, usually
very minor, didn't work. They would then have to set the whole
thing up again. The crew spent weeks shooting night and day. The film
cost six million dollars and took three months to complete,
including engineering the sequence. In addition, it's two minutes long
so every time Honda airs the film on British television,
they're shelling out enough dough to keep any one of us in clover for a
lifetime. However, it is fast becoming the most down loaded
advertisement in Internet history.

Honda executives figure the ad will soon pay for itself simply in
"free" viewings (Honda isn't paying a dime to have you watch this
commercial!). When the ad was pitched to senior executives, they signed
off on it immediately without any hesitation-including the costs.
There are six and only six handmade Accords in the world. To the horror
of Honda engineers, the film makers disassembled two of them to
make the film. Everything you see in the film (aside from the walls,
floor, ramp, and complete Honda Accord) are parts from those two
cars. The voice-over is Garrison Keillor.

When the ad was shown to Honda executives, they liked it and commented
on how amazing computer graphics have gotten. They fell off
their chairs when they found out it was for real. Oh! And about those
funky windshield wipers. On the new Accords, the windshield
wipers have water sensors and are designed to start doing their thing
automatically as soon as they become wet. It looks a bit weird in the
commercial. Just one-second of computer generation is used to link the
two halves-when an exhaust pipe rolls across the floor. At one
point, three tires roll uphill because inside they have been weighted
with bolts and screws.

Go to this website and watch the commercial....you won't believe it!

On the subject of motors. How much weight and amps can an 8" take before it

Seems to me that you are confusing the issue here, Rich. There is
nothing about a series-parallel setup that precludes having the
brushes in 100% contact with the commutator and having the timing
optimised.

If series-parallel with "stock" motors offers an advantage over stock
motors without, then series-parallel with optimised timing and brush
contact should offer a similar advantage over similarly optimised
motors without.

> What S/P does is give you two electrical gears. and this is good

So, have you got your dyno to run over 450A yet? Got any efficiency
numbers? What do you consider "dramatic"?

Taking EVParts' 9" curves, for example, it appears that at 1200A you
get just under 95HP out at about 55% efficiency, but from the same
curves, 2 of the same motors operated at 600A each would each produce
just over 50HP each, for about 7-10HP improvement. And there is no
indication that efficiency doesn't keep steadily dropping as current
increases further.

> A perfect run is to draw max amps from one end of the track to the
> other. S/P doesn't do this. It could.

Hang on a minute here, it either does or it doesn't; not it doesn't,
but could. This is like saying that brush timing doesn't help
(because most people don't have it set optimally, perhaps just as
most people may not have the series-parallel switch point optimised
yet), but that it could.

You've just admitted that series that series-parallel switching has
the ability to allow maximum amps to be drawn all the way down the
track if it is done right. That doesn't mean it is the only way to
get max amps all the way down the track, but it certainly says it is
a perfectly valid approach, and superior to any alternative that
won't allow this to happen.

> One of the founding concepts for a single large motor is, that the

Do you realise that this is exactly 180 degrees opposite to what you
have posted here in the not so distant past? You used to advocate
multiple motors as the way to *increase* the commutator and brush
area available to handle the power/heat.

As I pointed out above, if series-parallel takes stock motors to
places they couldn't otherwise reach, what makes you think it won't
do the same for well-prepped motors?

Series-parallel may or may not be a superior substitute for proper
motor prep (I don't think anyone has proven that yet), but one does
not preclude the other: whatever improvement series-parallel offers
can be improved by proper motor prep, and whatever improvement proper
motor prep offers can benefit further from whatever series-parallel
can offer.

Just because your latest kick is the tweaked single big motor doesn't
justify throwing hand grenades at equally valid (and proven)
alternatives...

Cheers,

Roger.

If it takes off it will be good for you guys and great for EV's in general!

Lots of people watch American Chopper and now American Hot Rodder. So the show should generate lots of interest, and yes emotional content helps keep the non technical audience interested.

You don't really think that the audience for American Chopper tunes in just to see how the bike looks do you?

Or even to see how Boyd finishes off his cars. You could tour the show room for that kind of stuff.

So yes it's a good thing to have a Wilde Man and a Madman in one show!

Good Luck and have fun with it!!!

I bought a re-branded Iota standby battery charger for ~$250, it is just
as susceptible to water as the Todd's but not nearly as fragile electrically.
Mine puts out an honest 50A, they also have a 75A model. Just like many
switching supplies it is rated for AC input but runs fine on DC. And, being
designed and built as a battery charger as opposed to just a power supply,
has fault-handling characteristics, and a built-in fan:

Meet the speed-hungry, rubber-burning, adrenaline-pumped electro-nerds reinventing the electric car. These backyard engineers believe they can achieve the goal that has eluded eco-freaks for decades—making electric cars a sexy consumer item.

Is anyone taping? I hope after the show mpeg can be posted on few servers for download. I'm for one, (may not be typical,) don't have a cable TV in my home...

Driver's ed students will see effects of DUI
By Jeff Gill The Times

For more information about the driver's education program this
summer at Gainesville High School, call the school at (770)
536-4441.

Gainesville High School plans to hold a driver's education class
again this summer, but with a slightly different twist.

Students will steer through an obstacle course in an electric car
while wearing goggles that simulate varying degrees of
intoxication.

The city police department, sponsoring the exercise with Hayes
Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Gainesville, plans to spend two days on the
effort.

"We think it's very important to show what the different levels of
impairment are and that it doesn't take much (drinking) to get to
that level," Chief Frank Hooper said. " ... Prevention is just as
important as enforcement."

Gainesville High now is registering students for the course, which
is set to run July 12-20. The course costs $250, with classes
running each day from 8 a.m. to noon, said instructor Wayne
Vickery.

Those interested in the class must at least have their learner's
permit. Successful completion could result in an insurance discount
of 15 percent to 20 percent.

The class has 30 slots, which will be filled on a first-come,
first-served basis, Vickery said.

The police department received a grant from the Governor's Office of
Highway Safety to run the program, police Sgt. Keith Lingerfelt
said.

The department also plans to take the electric car, which Lingerfelt
described as a "fancy golf cart," to other driver's education
programs in Northeast Georgia.

The highway safety office has designated the Gainesville Police
Department as the coordinating agency for the 11-county Northeast
Traffic Enforcement Network.

Other groups also are sponsoring events that focus on teen driving.

Road Atlanta in South Hall was to hold a safe driving clinic today
with 24 Hall County students.

Some "local celebrities" were to test their driving skills wearing
goggles that simulate impairment, according to Earl Fannin, the
course's director of media and marketing.

And National Honor Society chapters from East Hall, West Hall and
Flowery Branch high schools plan to hold a "Teens Rally for Life"
from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the Georgia Mountains Center.

The event will feature personal accounts by teens and their parents,
as well as talks by Panoz Racing School, insurance agents and area
law enforcement.

US Battery has for years been supportive of the road EV community. They'll
sell directly to you, delivering batteries either through a local dealer or
shipping them right to your garage. The price varies, depending on the
current cost of lead, but typically runs around $50 per module plus
shipping. My last batch of 8VGCs was around $53 each, IIRC.

They'll also fit whatever post style you like.

You won't get that kind of service with Trojan.

In a heavy Ev with lots of use and hills the 8 is not that big a motor.
As you up the amps the hang time(duty cycle) drops. I say with more than
2500 lbs a 9 incher is much better. A 8 will work, but you will over
heat it with long 500 amp pulls.
It like 175 to 250 amps of loading, The 9" can take 300 to 500 much
better.

Just like for FWD ICEs: it is meant to replace ICE's
engine/gearbox in front, but doesn't have to be in
front. Any FWD car can be converted to RWD by moving
it's engine/gear box to the rear, right?

The same applies to any EV drive - AC or DC.
The system has two half-shafts sticking out
of its gear box. Whichever axles you link them
to is up to you.

Another advantage is if your donor car has an
automatic or damaged transmission. You can ditch it.

Lee had a neat idea - take a normal FWD car and
add this system to the rear (VW bug or MR2 style)
thus creating a hybrid. In "EV mode" no need to run
ICE at all but you can always put the system in
continuous regen as you drive on ICE, thus recharging
your pack like Prius does and have no range limitation.

Another option is to use 100 kW max MES-DEA system; its AC induction
motors come integrated with single speed transmission as one unit.

Is this for front wheel drive cars ?

Joining forces into the future
TEAM Blackley build the car of the future.

PUPILS at St John Bosco Primary School and Charlestown Primary have
joined forces to build the car of the future.

The eight-strong team are doing their bit for the environment by
designing and building an electric powered vehicle for the Green
Power competition, run by St Matthews Technology College.

The young students were asked to design an electric car big enough
to contain a driver and powered without traditional fuels. The
winning team will be the one whose car travels the furthest. The
model is now in the early stages of building and the team is
confident that it will be among the forerunners, and could qualify
for the regional and national finals later in the year.

The youngsters, all aged nine and 10, used the latest technology at
the drawing board stage, conducting many of their design meetings
through three-way video conferencing.

The competition aims to increase entrants' interest in electrical
and mechanical engineering and improve teamwork skills.

Head teacher at St John Bosco's, Maria Woodward, said: The four
pupils from here and four from Charlestown Primary have combined for
this joint venture and have been very determined and dedicate to the
project from day one, when they completed the application to enter
the competition. The building is still in the early stages but the
team is confident that they can reach the finals.

Fellow pupils at the Hall Moss Road school have also been working to
help the environment, and celebrated the Easter break by giving
their school grounds a spring clean.

With Manchester City Council's 100 Day drive to a clean city coming
to a close, every pupil at St John Bosco's took part in a drive to
rid the school's playgrounds and fields from rubbish.

The council's environment department provided the litter picks,
gloves, tools and rubbish sacks and the students set to work,
clearing the extensive grounds of all the litter.

Maria Woodward added: All of the pupils have done their bit for the
environment during the council's Clean City initiative. They
provided the tools and our young students gathered up all the
rubbish. They worked hard to give the school a facelift and the
benefits are there for them all to see.

I agree. Now they wouldn't give me the large "L" posts I originally asked
for, but were fine with any of the other post styles. I got automotive SAE
posts. Pricing is very good.

Interestingly, all the distributors seem to be really in touch with the
company personnel and their involvements. I talked to Rick Fleenor in
Kansas City, and he knew about Nawaz, the EV list, and of USB's support for
EV's in general. I take that as a very good sign.
