Portland, Oregon, the epicenter of hi pro EVs.
Example: The post Woodburn scene found me confused about which EV to take to
the grocery
store...hmm, should I take Blue Meanie, White Zombie, or simply hop in
California Poppy?
Man, what a dilemma! On this day, I chose California Poppy, launching onto
Glisan Street
with both back tires squealing in protest with my head firmly banging back
against the
thin 914 seat back. Within seconds, I was way over the speed limit as more than
1000 ft.
lbs. of combined electric torque motivated me along.
See Ya....John Wayland

Eventually, yes. Wherever steel and aluminum meet and get wet, the
aluminum will corrode. The rate depends on how long it stays wet, and
whether there are any impurities in the water (like battery acid or road
salt).
It may be too late for it, but you can try painting it with some kind of
material that will soak into the joint, to fill the voids and keep water
off. It would almost have to be some oil-based paint or undercoating
material.

Hi,
I'm trying to improve the range of my electric Jeep Cherokee. So I've
been thinking about buying low rolling resistance tires for it. What
tires or tire brands have others had good luck with?
The Jeep still has Fisk Classic P225/75/R15 M+S tires on it, which it
has had since before the conversion. I had to pump them up to their max
pressure of 35PSI as they bulged some on the bottom otherwise. Also,
since the Jeep now weights around 4,000lbs., will the weight be a
problem when selecting new tires?
Thanks

Michelin Energy (green) MXV+ are costly but are probably the cheapest
way to get 10% more range or more. Some Goodyear Eagle LS tires will
perform similarly but they ride like iron and are very noisy. IMO
That sounds like a reasonable size. I know Sam's club carries them,
and they were cheaper than the Tire Rack.

Hey all:
Has any one ever used or have an opinion on an Interstate battery SRN-27 deep
cycle Mega-Tron battery? I have a car that it could work in, but would rather
not buy a problem battery. FYI - I would use 10 12vdc for a 120vdc single
string. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Toyo 800 Ultra <http://www.toyocanada.com/products/800Ultra.html>.
It is not specifically advertised as a low rolling resistance tire, but
it does roll quite nicely and delivers great fuel economy on ICE
vehicles. The 160,000km/100,000mi treadwear warranty and 44psi
inflation limit are both nice features.

The P225/75R15 Toyo 800 Ultra has a load rating of 102, which is
1874lbs, so there would be no problem.

If you have a twistlock than you should have a way that when the plug is in
the car won't go as driving off with the plug plugged in dose happen , but
thats not hard , a switch on the door that cuts off the main contactor will
do .

if your pack is lower that the input which I assume will be 240 ac than you
won't draw the same power as what your putting out , so a 120 pack might
drawl 1/2 .

As a middle school science teacher, I agree with Lee.
Another activity would be to get the kids into groups
of 3 and have them come up with answers to the
following questions (1 question per group):
1) What does it say that a person values when they
spend $40,000 on a vehicle that gets 12 miles per
gallon of gasoline?
2) What does it say that a person values when they
spend $40,000 on a vehicle that emits no carbon
dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, benzene,
oil spills, or formaldehyde, and gets the equivalent
of 100 mpg?
3) Why do you think that there has not been wider
acceptance of electric vehicles nationwide?
4) Where is energy lost in a combustion vehicle that
doesn't wind up getting used making the wheels go
around?
5) Where is energy lost in an electric vehicle that
doesn't wind up making the wheels go around?
6) What would be some of the global consequences if
the majority of people drove electric vehicles?
7) Our government predicts somewhere between a 20-40
year supply of oil (which is the raw material that
gets refined into gasoline). Do you think it is wise
and fair to you that people are driving the largest
cars possible? Why/why not?
8) Why do you think that your president is against
raising fuel-efficiency standards for automobiles?
9) Why do you think Americans oppose raising
fuel-efficiency standards for automobiles, while
people in other countries force their governments to
have high fuel-efficiency standards?
10) Alaska has a 6 month supply of oil. Do you think
it would be wise to drill for it right now? Why/why
not?
11) There are hundreds of moving parts in an electric
vehicle, and only three in the electric vehicle. What
does that say about the reliability of electric
vehicles? Give support for your explanation.
12) Right now, the US military is purchasing hybrid
vehicles, even though they are unavailable to the
public. How do you think these vehicles will help our
national security or military capability?
13) To be the most environmentally-friendly, what
type of power plant would be providing the electricity
for the vehicle?
14) Some people say this car is solar-powered. Is it?
What are 3 reasons that it make no sense to put solar
cells on the roof of the vehicle?
15) Japanese manufacturers built a Toyota RAV-4
electric vehicle, and sold it for a year in 2002.
Both Toyota and Honda have hybrids, which use both
electric and gas power together, to get 45 miles per
gallon. Why do you think the Japanese built these
cars 3 years before the first American hybrids might
be coming out?

Would you still drive your car if the tailpipe came out of the steering wheel?
Are you saving any gas for your kids?

If you can download that video of the tzero beating a muscle car on the drag
strip, it might excite the kids. People are always impressed when I play it
for them--definitely dispels the "golf cart" image of EVs.

That's a fun age group. But, you'll lose 'em if you just stand up there
and talk. They will want to see ACTION!
Can you get some videos of the NEDRA dragsters? Or, just bring some
pictures to pass around. Include some monster EVs, like an electric
train, giant earthmover, etc.
Bring a motor, a battery, and some wire (clip leads are easy). Pass 'em
around so they can see how easy it is to hook a motor to a battery and
make it go. If you have more "stuff", bring it too!
Describe (or demonstrate, if possible) electrics they can build. Toy car
motor, a couple AA cells, and a car made out of recycled materials with
a rubber band drive. Electric bike, with a car fan motor
friction-driving the tire, powered by a sealed battery.
Give 'em a handout that has a resource list if they want to learn more.
Books, movies (Race the Sun), places on the web, etc. One example is our
BEST website, www.bestoutreach.org.

PLEASE use some sort of encryption on the email addresses. That kind of
email list is just the thing spam-bots look for. On the EV Album the email
addresses are shown as gif images rather than plain text. This hides them
from spam-bots. It is a pain to make all those gifs, but it does the
job. There are other more advanced methods, but that is the one I use.

Per Roger's recommendation about Toyo tires: I don't know about their LRR
value, but we had a set on our 1986 300ZX that lasted 96,000 miles and had
to be replaced only because one got ruined by some severe puncture damage.
I've still got the 300ZX, too. If it were lighter, I'd convert it to an EV.

Ken,
Thanks, I'm really interested in the EV map from the
EVDL members. I'm glad somebody has taken the effort
to document this list.

Ken, rather than putting email addresses, why not put image links to the EV
Album? That way people can see all the details of the person's EV.
