Thanks Joe. On further investigation the state of
charge meter is a state of charge meter (or at least
looks like one with % indicated). There is some
charging issue going on. Last night it charged until
the batteries boiled, emitted a noxious odor, and an
alarm sounded. I unplugged it. The meter read 80%.
This morning it read 40%. I plugged it in and in 5
minutes it boiled. It his 80%. I unplugged and it
hit 40%. I drove it 11 miles this morning (about 20%
of estimated range under these conditions) and it
still reads 40%. When pushing down on the pedal the
state of charge meter decreases as the ampmeter rises.
At 300a the state of charge is "0" %. When I let off
the "gas" it pops up to 40%.
Do I have a charger setting issue? The charger is
American Monarch 15/20 amp, 72v. If it is a setting
issue how do I correct that.
thanks for any thoughts
Richard
PS The batteries are brand spankin' new Trojan T-145s.
PPS I am not sure what "equalize at 3% of the battery
capacity for 8 hours" means. Sorry to be such a dense
newbie.

You probably have a voltmeter being passed off as the
state of charge
meter.
You can determine if it is a meter or a battery
problem by measuring
the
pack voltage at end of charge and then 24 hours later.
If the meter reads high at the end of charge and then
40% 24 hours
later,
the meter is probably just a voltmeter.
If the voltage measurement is significantly less than
13 volts per 12
volt
battery at 24 hours after charge, then the battery is
probably showing
its
age.
If you equalize at 3% of the battery capacity for 8
hours, then the
voltage
should stay higher and indicate more state of charge
when full.
If the voltage is over 78 volts and the meter reads
less than 90%, then
the
meter is out of calibration.

Aerodynamics are very important regardless of the motive power. The
designs shown above will increase efficiency thus allowing a vehicle to go
further using less energy. The results speak for themselves.

That's odd. Halted has them listed as "New" and I've never known them to
sell defective parts without stating that they're defective.

I kow there are a few folks out there looking for affordable DC-DC
converters. While searching for something else, I came across this:
http://www.halted.com/ccp11977-dc-dc-converter-150v-15v-600watt-vi-n52-em-19678.htm
It's a Vicor Mega Mod:
Input 100V-200V (150V nominal) brown out at 85V
Output 15V +-10% @ 40 Amps
I believe some other folks ahve used these in EVs, so perhaps they can
comment on suitability, but at only $45 seems like too good of a deal to
pass up (I ordered one).

Boy! Can I get some of those!? :-)
In my experience 50 amp hours in an hour is not a number you should
plan on from a Optima or Orbital in my book.
If you keep them at 120 deg F, and take the best Optima you can find
I think you may get there. But I find that 33 Ahr is more reasonable,
and Orbitals are lower.

Was that a Baldor? My flaky memory tells me it was a Prestolite.
At any rate, I still have it. The com is in pretty bad shape, might be
able to have it turned down. I just haven't had the combination of money
and a local motor shop to repair it yet. As I recall it weighs about
140lbs so shipping it somewhere to be repaired isn't cost effective.
I still have plans for it since it is a compound wound motor with separate
series and shunt field connections. Seems like it might be useful. I
figure when I get the com repaired I'll see about having it redipped with
higher temp laquer.
Note: I did apply voltage and it spins (even with a missing brush).
Talk about getting bitten, manually connecting/disconnecting 12V to the
shunt winding will wake you up quick.

Bad in what way? A local EVer bought one of these from Halted and it is
working fine in his Fiero.
Seems rather odd that every one you checked was 'bad', yet a random
sample shipped to this fellow seems to work just fine.

Check the usual EV parts suppliers; perhaps someone still has one or two
in stock.
They are not in production. Peter Senkowsky services them for DCP now
(DCP will put you in touch with Peter, but no longer offers service
themselves), but will not repair power stages.

Yes and no.
DCP run by Damon is dead, but a new DCP is run by Peter. Peter
purchased the Raptor design and is currently repairing them and is
working with Damon to update the Raptor design for new production.
Peter does not plan on producing nor repairing the DCP DC/DC converter.

i bought cheap a non working Red Italvel electric scooter in september (i
fall in love with his italian race motorbike look)
electronic was missing but no matter my intention was to make it become a
race scooter.
I strip out the brushless 1.25Kw anemic motor and rebuild the rear arm to
fit a 10Kw Lynch motor.
add an Alltrax 24-72V 450A, 36V50Ah of Saft nicad cells(can't fit more), a
good fast charger et voil !
first real test ride was at the EV parade on Monaco EVS21: making a race on
an hilly road with the vectrix, what a test :^)
ok, i must admit here vectrix won (20km/h more speed than mine) but i was
hand to hand until 80km/h...
I don't know my max range, though i commute 35km today, 3/4 travel at 80km/h
so i should be happy with max range.
I still have to set down the controller...at 400Amp the scooter is way too
nervous for city driving and motor is heating fast.
During EVS21 i talk with KOKAM CEO...just dreaming about 30 kg double
voltage high power Lipoly pack instead of 65 kg of nicad...
will put it on the EValbum soon

An idea came to me while I was towing my new EV home, after having
just been for a tour of Paul Compton's motorcycle collection.
A pusher Bike! It would be ideal for moving an EV long distance, as
in delivering or collecting it. You would remove the front wheel, and
bolt the forks up to a pivoting bracket that straps on to the rear
bumper with the motorcycle steering providing the longitudinal axis
for going around corners. It would provide assistance after you get
the car up to cruising speed using its electric drive.
You need a remote control with: ignition switch, clutch switch and
throttle pot, and corresponding relay, actuator and servo on the
controls of the bike.
Leave the bike in 4th or some suitable gear, and when you reach
60-65mph, turn on the ignition, turn on the clutch switch and wait for
it to fire up, and then turn up the throttle until you no longer need
power from the EV's battery. For steep hills, use the EV's gas pedal
to help. If you have regen, this can be used to control the speed
going down hills, and regain some energy to the battery.
I guess a pretty powerful, probably watercooled bike would be needed..
but apart from that, can anyone see any glaringly obvious problems?
A couple obvious problems:
1) Most Japanese bikes use the same oil for crank case, gears and
clutch. So if the motor is not turning, nothing gets lubed.
There where one wheel tow gizmos at one time, where it'd lift the
front wheel up and trail the rear, but it sometimes burned out clutches
or transmissions.
2) The front forks might not take the full power of the engine without
bending.
I've got a 3 wheeler which is a 2 wheel front end with big clamp in
the rear that you clamp onto a motorcycle's frame, after removing the
front wheel _and forks_ .
On the plus side, the local auto impound auction frequently has a couple
motorcycles, and they go for $50-100 (unless they are Harleys).
Often these have messed up front ends.
It would be nice if you could keep the front wheel, or at least carry it
with you. That way you would have a motorcycle when it wasn't being a
pusher.

Ok, I'm thinking that as more Prius cars are built more are getting
wrecked. This could be a good source for NiMH battery packs. So as a
first cut range extender I'm thinking about installing 3 packs in my
Prizm as a booster pack. First thought is three packs for a total of 273
volts @20ah.
Instead of paralleling them with the first pack however I think I'd like
to use a PFC30 as a "charger" to charge the main pack off the NiMH, then
turn around and charge the NiMH pack either off the main or off 110 volts.
My other option is to rewire the Prius packs to 300 volts (thus having 2
packs out of 3) and manually switch in the NiMH packs then cut in the
main pack when I go over 20 miles for a 40 mile boost.
Questions:
Can one use a PFC30 to charge NiMH battery packs?
Can one swap charging plans on the fly?
Anyone got a PFC30 I could borrow for awhile?

Bob Schneeveis did this years ago. (is anyone surprised? :-)

Polluted a lot, but worked. I no longer remember the details of how
well it worked. Couldn't have worked too well since it wasn't on

Peter,
I agree from what I see but I am curious as to the problems Edward has
reported. Have you ever dealt with HSC and do they guarantee no DOA? Also
what support componants do you think this would need besides the minor
stuff, fusing, heat sinking, case fan etc? I have a couple of projects that
these would be ideal for and lots of heat sinks and cases. Seems like
something even I could impliment. Regards, David Chapman.

An excerpt from http://pdfserv.maxim-ic.com/en/an/app222.pdf :
"Typically, a NiMH cell is charged with a constant current until a
terminating condition is encountered.
The most common way to determine when a NiMH cell has become fully charged
is to either observe a
drop in the voltage or a rise in the temperature. As the cell becomes fully
charged, the voltage drops
slightly. At the same time, the temperature rises rapidly as less of the
charge source energy goes into
actually charging the cell and more of the energy turns into heat. "
The PFC30 is a CC/CV charger, although it does not have a thermal probe to
shut down the charging at a specific temp, I am sure a rudman regulator can
easily be modified to acheive the same goal.
Best to ask Joe or Rich.

Subject: Thoughts
Ok, I'm thinking that as more Prius cars are built more are getting wrecked.
This could be a good source for NiMH battery packs. So as a first cut range
extender I'm thinking about installing 3 packs in my Prizm as a booster
pack. First thought is three packs for a total of 273 volts @20ah.
Instead of paralleling them with the first pack however I think I'd like to
use a PFC30 as a "charger" to charge the main pack off the NiMH, then turn
around and charge the NiMH pack either off the main or off 110 volts.
My other option is to rewire the Prius packs to 300 volts (thus having 2
packs out of 3) and manually switch in the NiMH packs then cut in the main
pack when I go over 20 miles for a 40 mile boost.
Questions:
Can one use a PFC30 to charge NiMH battery packs?
Can one swap charging plans on the fly?
Anyone got a PFC30 I could borrow for awhile?

AKAIK, the Zilla's also offer a tach (RPM) output. And, they have the
benefit of being a current production item with full support.
Cheers,
Roger.

Do you have a link to a spec sheet on this? I wasn't able to find it at the
Vicor site. ( and, I couldn't find anything with the number ( VI-N52-EM)
given in the HSC ad.
Thanks

I've used Halted numerous times over the last 5-10 years. I've never had
a problem with them and everything I've bought from them was exactly as
advertised.
I'm not really sure about their return policy since I've never had to
return anything, perhaps I've been lucky.

Yeah, for some reason you can't look it up on Vicor's website using the
model number. I found it by using their online product selector and
plugging in the specs. And the part number it comes up with? VI-N52-EM
You can short cut the process, start at:
http://vicorwebapps.vicorpower.com/upc/MegaModInit?vInSeq=100
and put in 140V input, one output, 15V output, 600 watt, -10C to 100C
But all that gives you is the part number and price ($495)
All of the MegaMod specs are online (in one pdf) at:
http://www.vicorpower.com/documents/datasheets/ds_megamod.pdf
FWIW the part number translates like this:
VI-N = single output, 300-600W
5 = 150V input
2 = 15V output
E = -10C to 85C
M = 600W output current
OBTW it has a 'trim' control that should allow you to turn that 15V down
to 13.8V if you wanted too, or 14.5V for optimum performance (simulates
typical alternator output) from your headlights etc.

Hi Otmar,
is that to 80% DOD or 100% ? I know that Optima rates the YT at 52 Ahr at
the 2 hour rate (that's 26 amps for 2 hours for our newbies)
But I'd thought some earlier testing indicated approx 45-47 amps for 1 hr
to 100%.

Note that the MegaMod is just 2-3 VI-200 modules packaged in a single
housing for convenience.
