Another chance for Think?

The founder of the factory which produces the Norwegian electric
car "Think", Jan-Otto Ringdal, is considering buying back the
firm which he sold to Ford in 1999.

The company was in February declared bankrupt.

Ringdal founded Think Nordic in the early 90s. In 1999 he sold
out to Ford, which produced the electrically driven car until
2002, when the firm was acquired by Indian investor Kamal
Siddiqi.

On February 20th this year the company was declared bankrupt,
after the employees had not received their salaries since
December.

Ringdal does not want to confirm that he plans to buy back the
company, Romerikes Blad writes.

County to purchase two hybrid vehicles
03/12/2006 By ARTEMIS COUGHLAN Staff Writer

MOUNT HOLLY -- Burlington County officials are hoping to save
some money on high gasoline costs by purchasing two hybrid
gas-electric vehicles.

The freeholders Friday approved the request from the Resource
Conservation Department to buy two 2006 Chevrolet Silverado
four-wheel drive pickup trucks for $25,000 each through the
state’s Cooperative Purchasing Program, said Loretta O’Donnell,
the county’s assistant public information officer.

The buy allows the county to save 14 percent of the trucks’
cost.

The county will also apply to the federal government and the
state’s Clean Cities Alternate Fuel Vehicles Program for rebates
on the two trucks which will be purchased from Hertrich Fleet
Services.

Freeholder Deputy Director William S. Haines, said the trucks
will be used by the parks division and the Department of Resource
Conservation will monitor the cost effectiveness to determine
whether to buy more hybrid vehicles.

A hybrid vehicle is powered by a combination of an electric motor
that runs the vehicle at low speeds and a gas motor that takes
over on the highway.

The Times March 10, 2006
Exhausting all avenues in the search for a green Land Rover
By Vaughan Freeman

ONLY days after a fresh onslaught on drivers of 4 x 4
off-roaders, Land Rover has hit back. The famous builder of
go-anywhere off-roaders has unveiled a whole new raft of
technologies, aimed at making their vilified 4 x 4s greener, and
even more able on and off road than ever.

The next generation of Land Rovers, using the new technologies,
will be even more effective plunging through mud, traversing
glaciers and negotiating deserts, but will also produce zero
emissions in town using electric motors on the highways and
byways of the city. They will cut fuel consumption at other times
by up to 30 per cent, with a 20 to 24 per cent reduction in CO2
emissions.

The goal for Land Rover is to build cars capable of 50mpg for its
Freelander-sized vehicles. Its foresight is timely; it is now
open season on 4 x 4s, their persecuted owners seemingly a fair
target from all and sundry, and rumours are strong that Gordon
Brown, the Chancellor, will penalise owners in the Budget this
month.

Even the RAC Foundation has such cars in its sights, calling for
a new, higher road tax rate for the least fuel efficient, most
polluting cars in a pre-Budget letter to the Chancellor. All of
which comes after a stinging critique from Malcolm Wicks, the
Energy Minister, who told The Times: “There is crass
irresponsibility in some of the larger monstrosities people drive
around suburbia and in London. We have to move against this kind
of thing.”

He also accused UK and European car-makers of falling behind in
the race to produce “greener” cars, adding: “I’m disappointed how
slow some motor manufacturers have been to follow the lead of the
Japanese.”

Land Rover plans to put that right and within a few years new
Land Rovers will benefit from a raft of new technologies designed
to reduce fuel consumption and cut exhaust emissions. Matthew
Taylor, the Land Rover managing director, said: “These
technologies are practical, feasible, real-world solutions. In
every case, they preserve — and in most cases improve — our
breadth of capability. We are not prepared to dilute the essence
of Land Rover. But we are committed to improving fuel economy and
reducing CO2 emissions.”

At a standstill in traffic, and while waiting at traffic lights,
diesel-engined Land Rovers of the near future will turn
themselves off, thus reducing exhaust emissions to zero. A touch
of the accelerator will be all that is needed to restart the
engine thanks to the new all-in-one starter-cum-generator “that
allows the engine to be stopped automatically whenever the
vehicle stops, as in traffic, and restarted instantly and
automatically when required. The engine does not idle
unnecessarily when the vehicle is stationary, to the further
benefit of both fuel economy and CO2 emissions.”

Diesels — and about 90 per cent of Land Rovers sold are
diesel-engined — will be capable of running on a 25 per cent mix
of eco or bio-diesel refined from plants such as soya beans and
cereal crops. This should again reduce emissions compared with
diesel refined from mineral oils and result in a 25 per cent
reduction in CO2 emissions.

The cars will also recycle much of the energy that is wasted at
present. For instance, energy from braking will be stored in a
battery to power models fitted with electric motors for
pollution-free town driving. Pressing the brake pedal will ensure
that the drive-shafts and prop-shaft transfer energy that is
otherwise lost to an extra lithium-ion battery pack, separate
from the normal 12-volt battery system.

A heat-conserving system will recover heat from the exhaust and
recycle it to speed engine and gearbox warm-up in colder
conditions, again reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

It is the hybrid car, matching electric motors to diesel or
petrol, that should prove most beneficial. In town driving the
electric motors will power the car to speeds of up to 20mph and
drive only the front wheels. But the motors can also power front
and rear wheels if needed to help when the car is driving
off-road at low speeds.

The “green” Land Rover technologies are still at the development
stage and exist only in a skeletal “mock-up” of an off-roader
that looks like an X-rayed Range Rover. But the plan is to phase
in new models from 2008 and 2010 in a programme that should do
much to help to reduce the marque’s high profile as an automotive
hate figure.

Not that any of that is harming 4 x 4 sales. Total UK sales of
off-roaders last year neared 190,000, a record, a total that has
risen from the 80,000 sold annually only a decade ago.

It was also Land Rover’s best year on record, with 185,000 sold
worldwide, up 14 per cent on 2004, while UK sales were also up,
rising to a little below 49,000, a 3 per cent improvement on
2004, and the fifth record UK sales year in a row.

EVLN(Lodi hybrid purchase tax break proposed)

Lodi lawmaker wants tax break for hybrid buyers
Hank Shaw Capitol Bureau Chief Published Sunday, Mar 5, 2006

SACRAMENTO - Buying a hybrid vehicle will save drivers money on
gas, but they're so much more expensive than a regular vehicle
that economists say most will not save their owners money over
the life of the car.

Lodi Assemblyman Alan Nakanishi wants to fix that by giving
buyers a one-time income tax break of up to $3,000 as a way to
stoke hybrid sales and get more of the cleaner-running vehicles
on California roads.

"The tax credit will make it easier for average citizens - those
who need it most - to afford a highly fuel-efficient vehicle,"
Nakanishi said. "Asthma has increased a lot in the Valley, and we
really need to clean that up."

Nakanishi's bill is an example of a growing hybrid mania at the
Capitol.

Thirty-six of the Legislature's 120 members drive
state-subsidized hybrids - including Nakanishi, state Sen.
Michael Machado of Linden and Assembly members Greg Aghazarian of
Stockton, Dave Cogdill of Modesto and Guy Houston of Livermore.

Lawmakers' existing vehicles would not be eligible for the
proposed tax break; only future purchases would qualify.

Nakanishi's bill would extend the break until Dec. 31, 2009, or
when California sells more than 100,000 hybrids in any calendar
year. Last year, 44,809 new hybrids were registered in
California, according to industry statistics.

To get the proposed tax break, the vehicles must be bought or
leased in California and must be new, not used.

Should Nakanishi's bill pass, California's treasury would lose
between $3 million and $27 million a year, depending on who buys
the hybrid vehicles. Higher-income people pay more taxes and
therefore would be able to take fuller advantage of the $3,000
write-off. Less affluent buyers may not even owe $3,000 in state
income taxes.

The proposal is similar to a federal hybrid-car tax break.

Nakanishi says the amount of the tax deduction offsets the
average extra cost a buyer spends on a hybrid versus a regular
car. Some hybrids cost as much as $8,000 more than their gas-only
counterparts, however.

"Every dollar saved at the pump will be another dollar that can
be pumped right back into California's economy," he said.

This is not the first attempt to subsidize hybrid-car sales.

San Diego Assemblywoman Lori Saldana, who drives a 2005 Honda
Accord hybrid, proposed a similar bill last year that would have
given buyers a discount only on their vehicle license fees.

Saldana's bill would have drained the treasury of only $6 million
to $13 million a year. It died in the Assembly Appropriations
Committee.

Nakanishi says he'll try to get his proposal through the budget
committees anyway.

"I'm going to be optimistic about it," Nakanishi said. "There are
several reasons to bring up bills. One is to send a message."

Details of Nakanishi's AB2616 can be found at
www.leginfo.ca.gov.

BMW To Launch Hydrogen-Powered Hybrid Car 03.14.06 By Reuters

MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) - BMW intends to start serial
production of a hydrogen-burning 7-Series executive car within
two years, the world's largest premium automaker said on
Tuesday.

"We will present such a vehicle to the public in less than two
years," a spokesman said, confirming media reports. BMW had said
last year its hydrogen-fuelled cars, which emit only water
vapour, would make their debut in 2010.

BMW intends to build a few hundred such cars at first. They will
be able to switch between burning standard gasoline and hydrogen
so that drivers will not be left stranded while the
infrastructure to deliver hydrogen is built up.

The space that two fuel tanks take up means only the 7-Series
will offer the hydrogen package at first. BMW's long-term goal is
to offer hydrogen motors in all its cars.

BMW unveiled the world's fastest hydrogen-powered car at the 2004
Paris auto show. Dubbed the H2R, it can exceed 300 kilometres
(185 miles) per hour and reaches 100 km per hour from a standing
start in around six seconds.

While BMW is developing fuel-cell driven cars as well, it says it
is concentrating on the combustion engine because the sum total
of its features and characteristics offers the largest number of
advantages and benefits all in one.

EVLN(Rare Earths used in hybrids raise in price)
[The Internet Electric Vehicle List News. For Public EV

http://afr.com/articles/2006/03/02/1141191784554.html
Rare earths become scarce Mar 03 Chia-Peck Wong Bloomberg

Prices for neodymium and other rare earths, a group of minerals
used in iPod music players and hybrid cars, may rise on demand
from car makers such as Toyota as they boost sales of
fuel-efficient vehicles.

Demand for rare earths could almost double to 173,000 tonnes by
2010, driven by increased usage in hybrid vehicle batteries and
liquid crystal display screens, said Sydney-based Lynas Corp,
which is spending $65.5 million to develop the world's
second-biggest rare earths project at Mount Weld in Western
Australia.

Hybrid vehicle sales in the US might triple in the next five
years, AutoNation, the largest US car retailer, said in January.

Prices of neodymium and lanthanum, which is used in batteries for
Toyota's Prius, could also extend gains as production fell in
China on pollution concern, said the corporate and business
development manager at Lynas, Matthew James.

"Growth in rare earth demand coupled with a static, if not
declining, supply from China is creating what we say is the
perfect storm in the industry" for prices to rise further, Mr
James said.

He said that between 10kilograms and 12 kilograms of rare earths
were used in each hybrid vehicle's nickel metal hydride battery,
comprising about 30 per cent of the battery's weight. Nickel
metal hydride batteries are used in all of Toyota's fuel-cell
hybrid vehicles.

The most commonly used alloy group for these batteries is made
from a combination of rare earths such as lanthanum and cerium,
in addition to nickel and manganese, according to battery maker
Cobasys.

The term "rare earths" refers to any of a large family of
chemical elements consisting of scandium, yttrium and 15 other
elements, including lanthanum and lutetium.

China's Baiyun Obo mine in Inner Mongolia is the world's biggest
producer. Lanthanum oxide of 99 per cent purity cost $US1.90 a
kilogram from China as of February 10, up from $US1.59 in late
2003, Lynas said.

Hybrid vehicles cut fuel use by combining a gasoline engine,
battery-powered electric motors and brakes that capture energy
from stopping.

Rising US petrol prices have boosted sales of such vehicles in
the past two years and industry forecaster JD Power and
Associates estimated US sales of hybrids would grow 31 per cent
in 2006 to 277,642.

China's exports and production of rare earths were likely to fall
in the next few years as it tried to protect the environment and
bolster the value of its exports, said Zhang Hongjiang, director
of the China Rare Earth Information Centre.

"In the last few years, we dramatically increased our exports,
but the value shrank as international prices fell," he said.
"Now, the industry understands that prices will improve with
lower production and recognises that we have to protect the
environment."

The centre, based in Inner Mongolia, supplies rare earths
information to the National Development and Reform Commission,
China's top planning agency.

Prices of neodymium, used to build mini hard drives in laptops
and make headphones in iPods, more than doubled from late 2003,
to $US10 a kilogram in February, Mr James said.

Yttrium and europium are used to generate red on colour
television and computer monitor screens and Canada's AMR
Technologies claimed to be the world's biggest producer of
neodymium magnetic powder.

Rare earths "are fundamental to our lives", Mr James said. "We're
addicted to them as much as we are addicted to oil - we just
don't know about them."

Rare earths were also used in catalytic converters in cars and to
make small electric motors in parts such as windscreen wipers and
seat adjusters, he said. The annual trade in rare earths is
estimated by London-based Roskill Information Services to be
worth about $US1 billion ($1.3 billion).

"It's not the kind of value of copper and iron ore, but it's
growing," Roskill managing director Judith Chegwidden said.

Mr James said that after extracting and refining the mined
output, total global rare earth supply last year was probably
90,000 tonnes.

Production from China fell last year as some plants were shut for
polluting the environment.

FORD OFFERS INTEREST-FREE LOANS TO BOOST HYBRID SALES
Bloomberg

March 17, 2006 -- Ford Motor Co. is offering five- year,
no-interest financing on its gasoline-electric Escape SUVin
California and Washington, D.C., to boost sales in those
"trend-setting markets."

The loans are available through April 3, spokesman Jim Cain said
in an interview yesterday. Ford also offers $1,000 in incentives
nationally on the hybrid Escape. The no-interest financing can't
be used with those incentives, Cain said.

Ford, the world's third-largest automaker, in 2004 was the first
U.S. company to sell a gasoline-electric vehicle, after Toyota
Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. had introduced hybrid cars.
Hybrids reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions by
combining a gasoline engine and an electric motor that's used at
lower speeds.

"We are focusing on California and Washington, D.C., because they
are two hybrid trend-setting markets where customers value hybrid
vehicles most," Monte Doran, a spokesman for Dearborn,
Michigan-based Ford, said in an e-mail.

Ford sold 2,034 hybrid Escapes in the U.S. in this year's first
two months, an increase from 2,000 a year earlier, company sales
analyst George Pipas said in an interview.

Hyundai plans 'green' cars

South Korea's biggest carmaker Hyundai Motor is planning to
introduce environmentally-friendly hybrid-powered and fuel-cell
cars to China, according to a top official with its joint venture
in Beijing.

Xu Heyi, chairman of Hyundai's venture with Beijing Automotive
Industry Corp, told China Daily the venture would begin the
commercial production of petrol-electric hybrid-powered cars
before the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.

"Hybrid" means petrol engines can power cars and produce
electricity simultaneously. The electricity can also power cars,
helping to lower fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

The venture will begin to make hydrogen-powered fuel-cell cars by
2010, Xu said. Fuel cells convert hydrogen into electricity to
power the car and only emit water.

"These are important part of our efforts to provide
environmentally-friendly products as well as follow the central
government's call to build a resource-efficient society," said
Xu.

Hyundai's plans come as a slew of other foreign and domestic
carmakers have already started to produce hybrid-powered cars in
China or have announced they will do so. The country is the
world's No 3 car market but is short of oil.

Last year, Japan's Toyota Motor Corporation kicked off production
of the hybrid-powered Prius sedan in Northeast China's Jilin
Province with First Automotive Works Corp. It meant Toyota became
the first foreign car manufacturer to build hybrid vehicles in
China.

General Motors (GM), Volkswagen and Chinese car firm Geely all
plan to make hybrid-powered vehicles in China in 2008. GM says it
will also produce fuel-cell vehicles in China in 2010.

Analysts say hybrid vehicles have tremendous growth potential in
China as they are much more economical than standard cars.

However, hybrid engines are still a lot more expensive than
petrol and diesel engines. It would take the average driver seven
to eight years to recover his or her investment in a standard
hybrid vehicle, and most consumers would not like that, said
Michael Dunne, president of consultancy Automotive Resources Asia
Ltd.

Hybrid vehicles are only likely to be chosen by a few people who
are "ultra conscientious" about the environment, Dunne said.

According to industry statistics, Toyota only sold 487 units of
the hybrid-powered Prius in China in the first two months of this
year. The 2.0-litre car costs between 288,000 yuan (US$35,820)
and 302,000 yuan (US$37,560) here.

In another development, Beijing Hyundai's Xu said the venture
would launch a local-brand car in 2008 as part of its five to six
new products in the years leading to 2010.

"The local-brand car won't bear a Hyundai logo, but we haven't
decided on its name. It will be an economy model designed by the
soon-to-be-built Beijing Hyundai's research and development
centre according to Chinese customer tastes," Xu said.

He said the venture would soon begin building a new 300,000-unit
plant in Beijing, including the research and development centre.

Beijing Hyundai, set up in 2002, is one of the fastest-growing
car manufacturers in China.

The venture aims to sell 300,000 cars this year, Xu said.

In 2005, its sales surged by 62 per cent to 234,000 units from
the previous year.

The venture now produces the Elantra, Sonata and Accent sedans,
and Tucson sport utility vehicles.

Analysts have predicted China's vehicle market will total 10
million units a year by 2010, up from 5.9 million units last
year.

Ovonic(R) Hydrogen Hybrid Vehicle Begins Fleet Testing at South
Coast AQMD

LONG BEACH, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 03/16/2006 -- Experts from
around the world have gathered in Southern California this week
to chart the course for a future filled with hydrogen vehicles.
[...]
ECD Ovonics' hydrogen hybrid has been equipped with hydrogen
storage tanks using the company's proprietary solid metal hydride
technology, which enables hydrogen to bond at the atomic level
with a powdered metal alloy inside the tanks. This technology
allows storing hydrogen at much lower pressures than the 5,000 to
10,000 psi storage tanks typically used in other hydrogen vehicle
applications. The result is the ability to carry a greater volume
of hydrogen on-board to provide increased driving range, in this
case just under 200 miles.

"That's substantially greater range than most hydrogen vehicles
today, and an important milestone toward making hydrogen vehicles
a practical alternative for the highway," says Robert Stempel,
chairman and CEO of ECD Ovonics. "Our goal is to apply the
diverse technologies based on ECD Ovonics' proprietary work to
make advanced hybrid, hydrogen, and fuel cell vehicles
competitive in the marketplace. This hydrogen hybrid vehicle is a
great example of that evolutionary process."

ECD Ovonics' hydrogen hybrid has been turbocharged to compensate
for hydrogen's lower energy density and enhance overall
performance and drivability. Refueling during fleet testing is
taking place at a hydrogen station at the South Coast AQMD
headquarters, which has been specially modified to refuel the
vehicle at a low 1,500 psi.

My boss bought a few(3) big 3-phase diesel powered generators a few
years back.
The smallest I think is 35KW and they are turbocharged and they have
loadbanks and batteries but obviously the batteries are toast.
Anyway, He is wanting to get rid of them now and I mentioned that there
may be some people on the list that could be interested. I asked him to
take pictures and give me a list of specs for them.

They were originally slated for his property in oregon, very remote
power. They were removed from I think military service due to california
emmision requirements, but perhaps biodiesel would be ok. :-)

Trojan and US Battery are both quality products, and similar enough that
I think you will be hard pressed to find more than anecdotal data on how
they compare to each other. Both should be fine choices.

One interesting experiment would be to get half of each; 9 Trojan and 9
US Battery. See which ones work the best and last the longest in a real
world, side-by-side comparison.

The copper filled grease that McMaster-Carr sells is
P/N 2953K12. I had a hard time finding it when I read
about Rev. Gadget using it last year. It's indexed as
"Electrical Connection Corrosion Inhibitors" Go
figure. It's copper colored and comes with an
applicator brush in the cap. I smeared some inside the
lug and I coated the stripped outside and end of the
2/0 copper. I used allot and it oozed out during
crimping. I wiped off the excess and used the shrink
tubing to finish it up. So far so good...

Clarification:

A transformer-rectifier charger (the same thing sold by the millions for
almost all consumer battery chargers) is a TWC (third world charger)

The main problem with 8V batteries is that most folks use them instead of
6V batteries in order to get better performance (higher acceleration).
The only thing is that higher acceleration usually means more current and
8V batteries can't handle nearly as much current as 6V batteries.

If you can restrain yourself and keep the max battery current at or under
250 amps, then you'll get decent pack life. However, if you do this then
your performance will be about the same as using 6V batteries. If you are
going to live with the same performance, then you are better off using 6V
batteries because they will last slighly longer (assuming equal
performance) and cost a LOT less. 8V batteries tend to cost 30% - 50%
more than 6V batteries of similar weight.

FWIW My truck came with 15ea 8V trojans. By keeping my daily DOD below
50%, and max current under 250 amps, I managed to get about 2 years from a
pack that was already 2 years old and somewhat abused when I bought it.
However, acceleration was lethargic, um something like 90 second 0-60
times.

When you fellows speak of an 11 inch or 9 inch motor, of what is that a
measurement? Diameter of armature, diameter of case, length of case?

Generally it's the case diameter, however, on some motors I believe they
are refering to the endbell diameter which might be large than the
diameter of the main section or pipe.

  Hi EVerybody;

Wonder if EVerybody in the World that wanted an EV could write to
Jan-Otto, send him a few bux, and some incouraging words?

Think it could help???Has he an E or Snail Mail?

 Hi EVerybody;

The Force has a new home! Mike Young made the trek to Corrupticut
yesterday, with a traditional breakdown. He needed a new Fuel Pump for his
Crapsler van, tow vehicle, but DID make it by 9pm. Gees a 12 hour trip! From
Rochester. He coulda flown to China in that time by jet, or Chicago by
Amtrak!

Thanks guys for the responces, wish I had, well, not really, a yard full
to give away to keep the Cause going here. Mike came in got warmed up and I
spun a few Woodburn Vids from the John Bryan collection. My newer stuff
wasnt just stuff it in the VCR and hit 'Play", so I dug out the historical
stuff. White Zombie running THOUSAND amps, no 2400 stuff! Lottsa cars that
seem to have faded into EV history. But the progress! Great, almost as much
fun as the Vipers getting blown away!We blew them 'way away, I guess?
Haven't seen any lately, just poky Corvettes, JW has for an evening
snack<g>!

So thanks for the offers, one kind fellow offered a few bux EVen.I just
wouldn't have felt " Right" taking bux for James Worden's gift vehicle, that
they gave to me to think I would fix it up. But if SOMEBODY else can or
will, I feel better than if it just sits in my shed, for months-years.Other
stuff? well, I may ask a few bux for, like if I get the 87 Sentra going
again, I DID pay bux to buy and haul it up to CT and about 600 in structural
repair to the chassis, so it could be roadworthy someday.

   Seeya
