Hmm... what kind of person am I?
Is there a kind where I can engineer a stable reliable efficient car that I
can drive around AND allow for tinkering with it?
I like the idea of regen.
Can't you do that with a DC motor by adding on a generator? I think I saw
that at reverend gadget's site.
Doesn't look like there would be space for that in the 914 though, so a
motor that was built to do that would be ideal.
Grrr... so much to learn.
Thanks!

yes-- A) you get regen braking, which can add up to
25% range
B) higher voltages = lower amps = greater efficiency.
>

-Cost.
-Available systems sometimes not as adaptable to
existing transmission schemes.
-Decent performance only when using high voltages, so
how to get those voltages: 12V hawkers (AGM batteries)
need careful charge regulating, or they die early.
That incurs _additional_ costs, but it is _do_ able.

I take 8V due to increased performance but same
lifespan as 6V (or close to it).

Ahhh, but the 0-30 is WAAAAAAY sweet!!! It's that
last 10 mph that is the equalizer... I can lay rubber
without trying for the first 50' or so.
My Civic at 144 performs like stock, but the torque
curve is much different than a gas burner.

Yup, it's mounted in front now. Max airflow.
3) There is an electrical issue going on. Your

you're a leadfoot.
Might be a little bit of a lead foot, but I think I have the feel for

At 60 to 65 I'm in 5th. I also have a vibration problem which seems
to crop up right around 3000 rpm. I had the flywheel balanced, which
didn't help much, and just now got a new clutch, and pressure plate.
Still some strange vibrations going on at higher than 2500ish rpm,
though it seems better. But, yes I might be in too high a gear at
times.
I read somewhere (Convert It book), that when the amps start to fall
off (come back down), and volts (SOC) come back up, you have reached
about max for that gear. Giving it more gas at this point does not
raise the amp draw any more. I have not hooked my tach back up yet,
so I'm not totally sure on the RPM's.
I have been starting in 2nd unless there is a really big hill, and
then shifting up from there, usually ending up in 5th at 60 to 65.
4th at those speeds makes lots of noise. Maybe I have transmission
issues, though the car only has 35k original miles on it.

You're probably refering to the 9inch ADC motors? That would be approx 9
inches in diameter.

6V Flooded Golf Cart batteries are the type most commonly used in
conversions.
However, you wrote 6V SLA. SLA = Sealed Lead Acid, i.e Gel Cells or AGM
(Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries and these are most commonly 12V.

I believe 96V are what sell most of, but judging solely one what I've seen
on this list and the EVDL Photo Albulm, I think 120V is more common.
>
> So to get a minimum of a 120v system, does that mean 10 x 12v batteries?
If you are going to use SLA batteries, yes. If you are going to use 6V GC
(Golf Cart) batteries, then you'd need 20 of them. The GC batteries will
probably have more range, but weigh more and the vehicle will accelerate
slower.

There hasn't been any significant changes in the last 10 years.
If you have REALLY deep pockets, then there are some advanced battery
technologies available, and AC systems have come down in price, but not
much else has changed.
In fact Lead Acid batteries and series wound motors haven't changed
significanty in the last 100 years.
There are some new players in the game, but the basics are the same.

I'm guessing you saw 9" diameter - small EVs get by with a 6.7", light
freeway-capable get the 8", sometimes the 9", and heavier conversions
use 11" to even 13". Length runs around twice the diameter, and
weight from 50 to 200+lb.

You can go in steps with DC, but AC is more of a package deal. The
only DC system that has built-in regen is SepEx, but you'll see
home-made setups that work: 2-shaft motor with a generator on the
other end, or have room available on the output shaft to allow an
alternator run by a drive belt.
Learning how best to drive an EV that coasts as soon as you let off
the pedal can maximize that ability and minimize the need for regen,
but it is nice to have the ability. I have a production Ranger, and it
actually goes farther in town if I shift into neutral and coast when I
know I can get the most unpowered travel than if I leave it in Econ
all the time and use the regen every time I let up on the pedal.
Inertia that keeps the truck moving works better than braking with the
motor to create current that is fed into the batteries to be saved as
a chemical reaction, then use *that* energy to move the truck.
> On the batteries, I assumed 6v were standard because I read that on the
> electroauto.com site.
6v is "standard" if you plan on flooded batteries, 12v is the size of
most SLAs, which is what you mentioned. Cheap and average performance
means floodies, more pricey and quick/fast means SLAs.

At least. You *can* stuff 20 6v golfcart batteries into a 914 if you
need maximum range -- the same system with 10 SLAs will be lighter,
which means faster, and run out of juice much quicker!

Books? We don't need no stinkin' books! We got the Internet! Check out
the links section at EVAlbum.com (after you peruse the hundreds of EVs
pictured there). Some of the best web sites are maintained by listees
- maybe they can contact you off-list to help speed up your learning
curve before you venture into the real work.
> Or have there really been no advances in the field in the last 10 years?
>
Come to think of it, not too much in 10 years: the SLAs are
incrementally better but still need BMS; Otmar has tweaked the Zilla
enough to be the de facto standard of DC controllers; a little
fine-tuning has been done the motors for high current useage. I don't
know what AC system changes have occurred, but they seemed pretty
advanced before, so what they really need now is to come down in price!
Mine is an outside observer's view, so maybe some industry insiders
can give you (and the list) more of the "latest scoop".

Sure looks like the same guy. Running 4 EV auctions now. All with no

He lists a phone # though, (404)348-4419. Why not just call him? Hard

That's a phone # from the Atlanta, Georgia area.
That ID was made last year, I think that it's created around the same
date as the other ID. No indication it's hijacked from another user (no
history) but it looks like a second account for the same user which is
prohibited.

Hi my name is James and I love your show.. Got a question, why don't
you guys use transformers or inducers and the such.... you can amplify
your voltage and amperage on both dc and ac level, thus getting rid of
the batteries... I tried and tested it..seems to work on a low
budget.. But haven't tested it with high dollar transformers and
transducer, and other power increasing options. Guys its out there
don't think the power companies don't know about it, it can be done.
And we know all the rules to the perpetual motion law.. If it was
impossible then why make a law? There isn't a person can't fly law...
Anyway try the transformers and inducers, transducers and other
componets.. And do me a favor, if you do decide to use this idea.. can
i get some credit and some tickets to come and see u guys and help..

There are cars under both screen ids. Under the one you mention this
person has good feedback for many items but they are only five and
dime items they bought, not anything they sold!

I saved the gif and opened it in photoshop
I clipped the top right corner and made a jpg out of it
I didn't change the resolution
http://members.cox.net/junkymagi/page12-toprightcorner.jpg
tell me, you can really read that 1N number? the resistor value to the left
of it?
I can't
it's only a 72 pixel/inch resolution
if someone would scan it the schamatics at 600 pixel/inch, I'd put it up on
my cox account :o/
or mail me the book, I'd scan it and mail it back with money in the box to
cover them mailing it to me

No need -- Internet Explorer 6 butches these larger
GIFs on small display resolution settings, but if you
hover around the upper left corner, a little box comes
up, goes away, then a little box comes up along the
bottom that, when clicked, expands the picture, which
makes all the pages as clear as decent photocopies,
except for this page 12, but the last 4 pages are
enlargements that are readable. Incidentally page 12
is repeated at page position 26.
I saved and inserted these pages in to a 5 MB Word
document and it reads fine. If anyone wants me to
send it to them, whole or cut up in a few pieces, let
me know.

Jpeg compression generally makes this kind of thing a lot worse. Use
GIF or PNG which gives you back the same bitmap that you put in.

1N6818. 0.6 Ohms.
Yeah, some of it's a little fuzzy, but if you were actually going to
build it, it's useable.

Chirs, regarding electronic diagram image quality and email packet
sizes.......Google the word "PDFCreator". It is a freeware print driver that
creates PDFs. It will take the MSWord doc down to less than a Meg. I use it
principally for photograph emailing and to store electronic diagrams. I see
little if any degradation of image with large 16million color images, or B/W
big scanned diagrams.

Go to evalbum.com and take a look at the cars. Look for professional
builds, then look at their build sites.
Go to google and enter "build electric car"

Subject: RE: AC vs DC?
See I told you I know next to nothing.
So these DC 9s are not 9v, but 9 What? Amps? Inches?
I meant long term as in long time to finish. I'm not under any illusion that
I'll whip this thing together in 6 days as the kit suggests is possible. I'm
thinking it will likely take me 6 months or more of weekends. Not because of
the work involved necessarily, but because of my cautious nature of diving
into a world I know nothing about.
On the batteries, I assumed 6v were standard because I read that on the
electroauto.com site.
See this is what I mean by not knowing if what I'm reading is up to date.
That site said 96v systems were typical.
So to get a minimum of a 120v system, does that mean 10 x 12v batteries?
Is there a recently published, up-to-date book on the subject? I see plenty
of books 10 years or older, which I'm sure have good information and will
help me get a better understanding, but one that covers the latest
technology on the subject would be preferable.
Or have there really been no advances in the field in the last 10 years?
Sorry if this seems like an inquisition :) I just want to start in the right
place.
Thanks!
Mike

Long term as in taking a long time to finish, or long term as in completing
increasing levels of performance capabilities in steps?

I don't think EV motors come in 9v unless they're RC! You'd need a 72V or
higher motor, and run at least a 120v system for minimum performance. SLA
batteries come in a 6v size, but are most EVs use the 12v ones - Optima,
Orbital, Hawker, Concorde and several other brands.

IF you need more power, double feed it.
just put 2 runs of that romex(although I have a 100amp sub panel
installed in my garage and they used romex that I think is larger than
6) Just parallel them on the lugs. This is done all the time in industry
for equipment that pulls big amps because you can pull 2 runs of 0
easier than 1 run of 00.(example only, not amp speced) Remember these
are low strand count, very stiff stuff. IT also helps in the derateing
as the wire now has more surface area to cool.

My thanks to those who responded.
Roland says"If there is any bare electrical
connections or openings, I normally seal these with a
Lexan cauking."
I've not heard of Lexan caulk. Who makes that? Or did
you mean latex?
"I have a GFIC circuit breaker built into the EV right
after the input receptacle."
This won't protect for a ground fault in the extension
cord will it? That would seem the most likely point of
failure. I think I saw an extension cord with GFI
built into the source end at Home Depot.
"I do not use any circuit breakers for my disconnects
for my battery pack. I used two safety contactors that
cuts of the battery pack from the main contactor and
controller activated by the ignition key Square D
glass plug in relay that is terminal strip rail
mounted." What does this mean?
Thanks for the battery cleaning info.

Put the vehicle in neutral and get some RPMs. Does it
still vibrate?
Don't get them too high, as this is bad for the
windings.
I had a bad tranny, and replacing it was the best
thing I did! Now I have pure quiet! I purchased used
from a junkyard, and it was like, 275-300.
Keep the RPMs as high as you _safely_ can. As you
mention, w/o a tach, it's hard to know, unless you
know from others with the same model of rig...

I can recall using capacitors across switches to limit
arcing on disconnect. Now I am seeing several posts
that suggest using diodes and even zener diodes across
switches to remove back emf surges on opening (and
closing?) switches. Where can I get info on this? I am
wondering how to determine what switches need the
protection and how to determine the values for the
components used.
Thanks,

I tried that but it was inconclusive. I have also jacked up the car
and put it on jack stands, and then tried it in gear (turning the rear
wheels) and out of gear, again, not really conclusive.
I have also taken out the motor and transmission, then run them
outside the car on the garage floor (with jumper cables) to see if I
can get the vibration, and have just run the motor and flywheel, and
then motor, flywheel clutch and pressure plate as a unit. That is how
I figured out that the flywheel was out of balance.
I just replaced the clutch and pressure plate this weekend, so
yesterday was the first day with all new stuff.
I also changed the motor mounts from having rubber bushings to
something which is completely solid so the motor was not torquing
around. This made the vibration more noticable, and I'm thinking I
might want to go back to the rubber bushings, and maybe have a torque
bar instead.
