My apologies.  You're right, I made too sweeping of a statement.  

I grew up in the era when America had recently been stunned by the Soviet 
Union's initial leadership in space exploration.  Science was a priority and 
although I ended up in a liberal arts field I still got a good science 
education.  (Having a father who encouraged it didn't hurt.)  

Today I work at a university, so I meet college students.  It saddens and 
frustrates me to encounter many who seem to have no clue about basic 
physics.
